Excerpt from the "Three-Step Rose Growing Method" series

Yesterday Blue Demon introduced the post-bloom pruning method for repeat-blooming climbing roses, through which proper pruning can promote the opening of a second flush. So how should roses be pruned after they finish blooming?

Characteristics of roses:Before talking about pruning roses, Blue Demon will first talk about the flowering characteristics of roses. Roses bloom only once a year in spring, and in the other seasons they only grow branches without blooming. Therefore, post-bloom pruning is very important. If you do not prune in time, the branches will grow too densely. Taking up space is one aspect, but more importantly, it easily leads to pests and diseases. The current year's shoot buds and leggy branches of roses do not bloom, but they are the main blooming force for the next year.

Roses grow vigorously. If there is sufficient fertilizer and water, we will see that while roses are blooming, there are some leggy branches that keep growing but do not bloom. These are leggy branches. Those sent out from the base I call shoot buds.Post-bloom pruning method for roses:Blue Demon also grows a rose. Every year after it finishes blooming, I do hard pruning, and every time I do hard pruning I find a large number of yellow leaves and red spider mites.

This is mainly because I, Blue Demon, train the rose to grow on a wall. When it blooms, the branches and flowers are packed densely, and the ventilation is relatively poor, so it very easily gets yellow leaves and red spider mites. Every year after blooming, Blue Demon does heavy pruning on this rose. I cut away all the flowering branches and the old branches that have not produced leggy branches, keeping only the leggy branches.

Each year I keep only the strong leggy branches and shoot buds, train and shape them in winter, and in spring they can bloom all over the wall. Because roses grow extremely vigorously and have a very long growth period, if you do not have a particularly large space for them to grow, I suggest you do heavy pruning just like me.Note:

What needs attention here is that if your rose has no leggy branches and no shoot buds, then you had better not do hard pruning, otherwise it will grow weak and spindly.

The above is my, Blue Demon's, method for pruning roses. If what you grow is a once-blooming large climbing rose, similar to Blue Demon's Meilang Zhenzhu, I suggest you also prune it according to Blue Demon's rose pruning method.

For once-blooming varieties, whether roses or Chinese roses, if the growing space you can provide is not very spacious, Blue Demon suggests you do appropriate heavy pruning, but the prerequisite for heavy pruning is having strong shoot bud branches. If there are no shoot buds, then you cannot do heavy pruning. You should strengthen fertilizer and water management, and once the shoot buds grow out, it will not be too late to do heavy pruning. After all, once-blooming Chinese roses and roses have three seasons of growth time, spring, summer and autumn, so as long as fertilizer and water are sufficient there is no need to worry about their growth.

Flower friends who saw Blue Demon prune Meilang Zhenzhu last year should all know that at that time it was almost pruned bare by me, but now it is full over the wall again.

Now Chinese roses are shipped with flower buds, flower friends can enter the shop to buy
