Reasons Why Christmas Cactus Only Grows Leaves but Does Not Bloom and Solutions
1. Fertilizer problem
(1) Specific reason: We all know that different fertilizers have different effects. So, if the wrong fertilizer is applied, it is very likely to cause the leaves to grow well, but the flowering situation to be unsatisfactory. Specifically, there is too much fertilizer containing the N element. Conversely, there is too little fertilizer containing the P element and the K element. Failing to get the fertilizer type right is a common reason.
(2) Solution: Therefore, before blooming, it is necessary to reduce the application of nitrogen-containing fertilizer and use some phosphorus fertilizer. Doing so is not only beneficial to the formation of flower buds, but can also make the color of the flowers bloom more vivid and bright.
2. No pruning
(1) Specific reason: Proper pruning also plays an important role in the plant's blooming. This is because its flowers form at the tips of its new leaves. Pruning, in turn, causes new leaves to grow, and this is also one of the key factors that makes it bloom.
(2) Solution: It is best to cut off the frontmost one to two segments in mid-October each year. This is beneficial for it to grow flowers.
3. Unsuitable light
(1) Specific reason: The unsuitable light mentioned here does not simply mean too much or too little, but rather a poor combination of daytime and nighttime. It is a short-day plant and needs eight to ten hours of light per day. If there is already sufficient light during the day, do not let it be exposed to light at night. If the light duration is too long, it will also affect its differentiation of flower buds.
(2) Solution: Reasonably balance the time of exposure to light during the day and at night. It is best to have sufficient light during the day and keep it in darkness at night.
