After Kalanchoe cuttings have taken root, do not forget to prune. No matter what flower it is, you must learn to trim it. An untrimmed flower is not only unattractive but also affects its growth rate and delays flowering. Today I will teach everyone the methods and precautions for pruning Kalanchoe

Pruning Season

Spring and autumn are good seasons for pruning, but when pruning in spring and autumn, choose a time when the Kalanchoe is not blooming. If it has bloomed, wait until the flowers have faded before pruning. However, remember that whether or not it has bloomed, pruning must be finished before September, as this helps the Kalanchoe store nutrients and bloom

Pruning Length

When pruning Kalanchoe for the first time, be careful to keep at least 5CM of height at the base of the Kalanchoe. After that, keeping it at around 12CM is enough. Do not cut off all the branches and leaves, otherwise the plant will not be able to breathe. If there are too few branches and leaves, they cannot provide nutrients to the plant, which affects plant growth and in severe cases can cause plant death

What to Prune

The targets to choose for pruning: the methods for pruning Kalanchoe include pinching and topping. Besides these two methods, when pruning Kalanchoe, choose taller branches, about 12CM or more in length. Do not spare branches that look withered and yellow and have already bloomed. Also prune those whose growing environment is crowded and those whose branches grow irregularly

Pinching

For Kalanchoe that has taken root after cutting, when its growth height reaches about 5CM, the new buds at the top need to be pruned off. After pruning, pay close attention to the plant's growth. If the top of the Kalanchoe is growing vigorously, then carry out a second trimming

Topping

When topping, pay attention to the height of the plant. It is best to do it when the height is about 12CM. Before flower buds appear, prune off the parts of the plant that are too tall, keep 3-5 pairs of leaves, and then cut off the tender buds at the top

Thinning Branches

Pay attention to the growth trend of the Kalanchoe. For those whose growing environment is too dense and which cannot get sunlight, or those that are slender and weak, prune from where the branch connects to the main stem. Do not prune randomly; look at the overall condition of the plant. It should not only be attractive but also allow the plant to grow more vigorously, let sunlight reach the inner leaves of the plant, and allow ventilation, so that the flowers the plant produces can be larger and more numerous, and the growth cycle longer

Care Methods

Do not throw away the branches after pruning. Those from strong branches can be kept for cuttings. In order to let the Kalanchoe burst into a full pot, only after cutting in this way can new Kalanchoe grow. After pruning the Kalanchoe, do not be careless. Apply compound fertilizer in time to promote the growth of side branches. If the pruning season happens to be autumn, then the Kalanchoe also needs some phosphorus fertilizer to let it store up for blooming
