In the morning my husband brought me a lvdagun, saying that today was some kind of festival and that local custom was to eat lvdagun. Lanyao thought for a moment: yesterday was Youth Day on May 4, and today did not seem to be any festival. Only after checking the perpetual calendar did I learn that today is actually Lixia, one of the 24 solar terms.

Although Lanyao loves growing flowers and plants, I do not remember much about the farming calendar. Most flower friends probably feel the same as me, right? In the blink of an eye it is already Lixia; spring has entered its final stage, and summer is about to begin.

For those growing a rose flower wall, most of the first flush of flowers and leaves has nearly finished blooming, and early-blooming varieties should already be almost done.

What should we do after the first flush finishes? Pruning, of course. Recently many flower friends have asked Lanyao about how to prune climbing roses after blooming.

Today Lanyao will introduce the post-bloom pruning method for repeat-blooming climbing rose flower walls.

Spring post-bloom pruning method for climbing roses:

For repeat-blooming climbing roses, if you prune properly in time after the first flush of spring flowers finishes, they can still bloom for another flush.

After the second flush, summer arrives, and generally they will not bloom again, or will bloom only a little.

For multi-headed climbing roses, it is very necessary to cut off the spent flowers in time, which can reduce waste of nutrients. After all the flowers on an entire branch have faded, that branch should be cut back.

Post-bloom pruning principles for climbing rose flower walls:

For vigorous branches, cut back 1/3-1/2 of the branch. Thinner branches can be cut back by 2/3 of their length. Branches that are too thin and weak should be cut off entirely.

For old branches whose new growth is all thin and weak, Lanyao suggests cutting them off completely. Although the branches look long and it feels a pity to cut them, you should know that such branches have weak growth capacity, and cutting them off can increase the airiness of the plant; ventilation is very important for rose growth.

Of course, everything has two sides. If your climber is a small seedling and there is no ventilation problem, then Lanyao suggests keeping such weak old branches.

In addition, diseased branches, dead branches, and overly dense branches also need to be cut off completely.

Blind branches should be pruned according to the condition of the branch. Thick blind branches that meet flowering conditions should be lightly pruned to encourage buds. Blind branches that are too short and too thin should be cut off completely.

After this kind of pruning, strengthen fertilizer and water management, and one month later the flower wall will be full again.

The above is the pruning method for climbing roses after the first flush of spring flowers. It is very simple. Later Lanyao will introduce the pruning method for climbing roses before summer begins, as well as the pruning method for once-blooming climbers,Welcome to follow Lanyao's WeChat public account: Lanyao Garden (ilanyao)
