Spring willow, whose proper name is Chinese tamarisk, also known as weeping tamarisk, water tamarisk, river willow, man willow, red tamarisk, three-sleep willow, red willow, West Lake willow, Guanyin willow, and more. Spring willow is a shrub or small tree, with red-brown bark, fine drooping branches as soft as silk threads, and graceful supple twigs. In full spring its green branches resemble cypress leaves, bearing small pink flowers at the tips, and it keeps putting out new inflorescences; as old flowers fade, new ones bloom again. Within a few months it rises and falls three times, endlessly continuing, so in some places it is also called "three-spring willow."

There are 100 species of plants in the same genus as spring willow, and China has more than 20 of them, mostly distributed across Henan, Hebei, Shandong, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu, Hubei, Anhui, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, Yunnan and other provinces and regions of China.

Though it appears delicate, the spring willow's vitality is especially exuberant and tough, tolerant of drought, waterlogging, cold, sandy wastelands and saline-alkaline soil, and it also has wind-resistant characteristics, so these shrubs are usually planted as windbreaks or hedges. Spring willow grows fast, has a well-developed root system, strong sprouting ability and great plasticity, making it an excellent bonsai tree material.
