When pneumonia occurs, it is like an invasion: external pathogens break through barrier after barrier and open the door to the human body. With timely treatment and abundant vital qi in the body, the external pathogens can be driven out in time, the illness cured, and normal bodily function and health restored. But in reality, many people have deficient vital qi and cannot quickly restore it to abundance through tonic treatment, so they can neither be cured nor durably resist external pathogens and ensure health. This is why pneumonia pathogens need to be actively treated in ordinary daily life.

The pathogens of bronchopneumonia are mostly colds, and wind-cold binding the lung is common. For patients who are prone to colds due to deficient vital qi, and for their family members, if conditions permit, it is good to prepare some wild Chinese medicinal herbs for treating colds. In daily life, in the fields and along roadsides, there are still quite a lot of Chinese medicinal herbs that can be used to treat colds, such as almond, radish seed (lai fu zi, radish seed), schizonepeta (jing jie), scallion bulb, ginger, white mustard seed, dried tangerine peel, platycodon root, bupleurum, ephedra, licorice, fermented soybean, and so on.

For the various Chinese medicinal herbs that are easy to prepare as listed above, when treating the pathogens of bronchopneumonia such as colds, one must understand cold and heat patterns and "warm what is cold, cool what is hot." Herbs such as ephedra, almond, saposhnikovia root, pinellia, peucedanum root, dried tangerine peel, white mustard seed, radish seed, and platycodon root are mostly used in treating colds or pneumonia marked by wind-cold binding the lung, as in formulations such as Maxing Shigan Tang.

Schizonepeta, perilla seed, dendrobium, reed root, and the like are all commonly used for wind-heat-type colds and the bronchopneumonia they cause. Some herbs can be used together for the pathogens of bronchopneumonia such as colds triggered by wind-cold or wind-heat, such as licorice, saposhnikovia root, platycodon root, and almond. Therefore, when self-preventing and self-treating the colds that are the pathogens of bronchopneumonia, one should accurately understand whether the symptoms, tongue coating, and so on represent a cold or heat nature, and use herbs in the opposite direction to treat it.
