What Are the Common Pests and Diseases of Calla Lilies? Detailed Solutions
I. Diseases
1. Soft rot
① Symptoms: After contracting this disease, the parts near the ground rot and then fall off, and the disease gradually spreads upward; the leaf edges become soft, the flower color deepens, the flower stalks drop, and eventually the entire plant may even die.
② Solution: At the early stage of the disease, remove its diseased spots and spray some formaldehyde on the spots. When planting this plant, do not plant it too deep, and it should not receive too much water. Severely diseased plants should be pulled out and burned completely to prevent infecting other healthy flowers.
2. Leaf spot
① Symptoms: This disease is generally caused by three types of fungi, most commonly Phyllosticta. At the early stage of the disease, nearly round, whitish spots appear on the leaves, and they gradually grow into large patches, and may even damage the flowers and stalks.
② Solution: Once diseased leaves are found, remove them thoroughly immediately, then spray with emulsifiable concentrate, preferably once a week. After two or three times, it should be mostly recovered. During routine care, never water too much.
3. Mosaic virus
① Symptoms: When infected, its leaves shrink and become deformed. Then the areas along the leaf veins fade, and light-colored small spots appear on the flowers.
② Solution: At the very beginning of planting, choose disease-free plants. During the growing period, once diseased plants are found, burn them promptly. Malathion can be used for control.
II. Pests
1. Symptoms
The main pest is the seed fly, which is a type of maggot. Its young larvae attack the area of the seedlings, causing them to rot and then die.
2. Solution
You can use well-rotted organic fertilizer to care for it, which can prevent adult insects from laying eggs. During the period when this pest is most likely to occur, carry out control promptly. You can spray with some insecticidal powder, or treat its soil and seeds with a chemical agent before planting.
