Can rose seeds germinate and be planted to grow roses? Generally, rose seeds cannot be planted, because the seeds will mutate, and the original characteristics of the rose cannot be maintained. For example, the fragrance, color, and flower size will all change. So roses are generally propagated by cuttings or grafting. However, some rose enthusiasts can still try germinating them from seed, but they must use the sand storage method during overwintering for seedlings to emerge.

How to pre-sprout rose seeds

Pre-sprouting:

Generally in winter, when the skin of the rose fruit turns red, it can be cut off and stored in moist sandy soil at 0-6°C. Usually, pre-sprouting can be done in January or February of the following year. Of course, plump seeds should be selected, put into moist sandy soil, wood shavings, or vermiculite, and tied tightly in a plastic bag.

Generally place them in an environment without light and with relatively large temperature differences between morning and evening. After the temperature gradually rises, check once a week and carefully pick out the seeds that have cracked and shown white.

Due to the above characteristics of rose seeds, newly harvested seeds cannot germinate. Before sowing, they must undergo "sand stratification" treatment to germinate and emerge. That is, mix the seeds with wet sand, put them into a container, cover with 3-5 cm of wet sand, and place them at 0-2°C, refrigerate for 60-90 days, and then sow.

Flower lovers who like a challenge can indeed try the above method. In fact, in most cases it is still better to use the cutting method, as the survival rate is relatively high, it can also maintain the characteristics of the product, and propagation from cuttings is relatively fast.

Some flower lovers also use the grafting method, but for ordinary flower growers this is a bit difficult and the survival rate is not high. Some also use layering and division methods, but these all require a certain level of skill.
