The money tree (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) is an extremely popular indoor green plant, native to tropical Africa, but unlike those plants from tropical South America, the money tree is actually a very drought-tolerant and shade-tolerant plant, with a particularly strong water-storage capacity; even going a month without water is no problem! Conversely, then, money trees that drown from too much watering are very common...... So what should you pay attention to when growing a money tree, and how do you rescue one that has already been overwatered? Let's take a look together!
First, how often should a money tree be watered? Although the money tree is drought-tolerant, you should still pay attention to the frequency of watering. The specific watering should depend on the size of the potted plant and the environment. The normal watering time for a money tree is when the leaves are slightly dry, which is the best time to water. The amount of water should be adjusted according to the potting soil and the size of the plant.
When cultivating a money tree, you should also pay attention to choosing a good soil substrate. Some loose, breathable soil makes it easy to control moisture and facilitates the growth of the money tree's root system. When the root system grows well, the money tree will also grow quickly. Also, when raising a money tree, it is recommended to place it in a place with good ventilation and suitable temperature. A ventilated place makes watering the money tree easier. If the environment is unventilated and watering is not well controlled, it can easily cause root rot.
Because the money tree has tuberous roots (like small potatoes), generally in May when repotting the money tree, the tuber division method is used for propagation. After taking the money tree out of the pot, shake off the soil, find the ones with sprouting points on the tubers, cut the large individual tubers into several small pieces with sprouts, let the wounds dry, then with the sprout points facing up and the tubers below, soak them in water mixed with carbendazim and rooting powder for about 2 hours. After soaking, bury them in soil made of 80% moist peat soil + 20% perlite (not too deep, about 2 cm), place them in a cool, ventilated place, and water only after it dries out completely. Once 5 leaves have grown, they can be transplanted.
If there is insufficient light, it will also cause poor growth of the money tree. The money tree is a plant that tolerates shade and also likes sunlight, but it dislikes direct sunlight. If exposed to direct sunlight, it will cause leaf scorch. In summer, the money tree can be placed outdoors in the morning or evening for ventilation. In winter, we need to ensure the money tree is in a humid yet somewhat dry environment. If the temperature is too low, the money tree will drop its leaves and wither.
Usually pay attention to observation. As long as you find side buds growing horizontally and irregular new shoots just emerging from the soil, cut them off promptly. When the plant shape grows to a certain height, you should also promptly pinch off the growing tips and buds. Cut off all crossing branches, inward-facing branches, overlapping branches, horizontal branches, leggy branches, and so on.
The money tree is a fertilizer-loving plant with very high nutrient needs. Besides putting a certain amount of fertilizer cake and compound fertilizer into the growing soil, during the growing season it also needs fertilizing two to three times a month. When fertilizing, mainly use monopotassium phosphate, especially after the beginning of spring when the weather gradually warms up, the growth of tender buds needs a large amount of nutrients to supply it.
Compared with other green plants, the money tree is still relatively easy to grow. First, you don't need to pay excessive attention to watering. Throughout the year, apart from the growing season, watering once a month will still allow it to sprout. If the money tree has already been overwatered, you can put it in a dry, ventilated place and let it sit for a period of time. During this time, fertilizing once every few months is enough, but there must be a sufficient amount. It has the ability to recover on its own. At the same time, like other plants, the money tree needs to be repotted about every two years, which basically means replacing the soil, because in two years the money tree can completely absorb all the nutrients in the soil.
