The chrysanthemum is the third of China's ten most famous flowers, one of the Four Gentlemen among flowers, and one of the world's four major cut flowers. It is because of the chrysanthemum's noble character of blooming proudly in cold and snow that Tao Yuanming wrote the famous line, "Picking chrysanthemums by the eastern hedge, I gaze leisurely at the southern hills." Since ancient times, Chinese people have also had the custom of viewing chrysanthemums and drinking chrysanthemum wine on the Double Ninth Festival!

Growing habits of the chrysanthemum

The chrysanthemum likes sunlight and dislikes shade; it is drought-tolerant and afraid of waterlogging. It grows well in a warm, humid environment, and in severe winter its roots and stems can overwinter underground. The flowers can withstand light frost, and the most suitable growing temperature is around 20°C.

The chrysanthemum likes sandy loam on high, dry ground with deep soil, rich in humus, loose and fertile, and with good drainage. It can grow in slightly acidic to neutral soil, with pH 6.2-6.7 being better.

The chrysanthemum is a short-day plant, requiring less than 12 hours of sunlight per day, though different varieties may vary slightly.
