In ancient times, there was the cuckoo bird, which cried mournfully day and night until it coughed blood, dyeing the flowers all over the mountains red, hence the beautiful name "azalea." Today, azaleas are widely cultivated and are excellent bonsai material; their dark green leaves also make them suitable for planting in courtyards as low hedge screens.

Other names for azaleas

Mountain azalea, mountain pomegranate, yingshanhong, zhaoshanhong, Tang azalea.

Growing habits of azaleas

Azaleas originally grow in mountainous areas or under pine forests at altitudes of 500-1200 m. They prefer acidic soil and dislike calcareous soil, so azaleas are often used as an indicator of acidic soil.

Azaleas like moist, cool, well-ventilated, semi-shaded places, and are neither heat-tolerant nor cold-tolerant. The most suitable temperature for growth is 12-25°C. In summer, the temperature must not exceed 35°C, otherwise the plant will enter a semi-dormant state. Therefore, in summer they should be protected from sun and shaded, and in winter they should be kept warm and protected from cold.

Azaleas need sunlight to grow, but avoid harsh sun exposure. They are best grown in places with not-too-strong light and plenty of diffused light.

The flower language of azaleas

The joy of love, great good fortune, boldness, purity, loyalty, homesickness.

Prosperity and good luck, resilience and optimism, a flourishing career.

For white azaleas, people consider them elegant and refined; giving them between men and women appears even more tasteful. For red-and-white azaleas, the meaning is deeper, expressing: the hope of blending harmoniously with you and creating a beautiful tomorrow together.
