In ancient times there was the cuckoo bird, which cried mournfully day and night until it coughed blood, staining the flowers all over the mountains red, and thus the azalea got its beautiful name. Today, the azalea is widely cultivated and is a good material for bonsai; its dark green leaves also make it suitable for planting in courtyards as a low hedge barrier.

Other names for the azalea

Mountain azalea, mountain pomegranate, yingshanhong, zhaoshanhong, Tang azalea.

The growth habits of the azalea

The azalea originally grows in mountainous areas or under pine forests at an altitude of 500-1200 m. It likes acidic soil and dislikes calcareous soil, so the azalea is often used as an indicator of acidic soil.

The azalea likes moist, cool, ventilated and semi-shaded places, and is neither heat-tolerant nor cold-tolerant. The most suitable temperature for growth is 12-25°C. In summer the temperature must not exceed 35°C, otherwise the plant will enter a semi-dormant state. Therefore, in summer it should be protected from the sun and shaded, and in winter it should be kept warm and protected from the cold.

The azalea needs sunlight to grow, but it should not be exposed to scorching sun; it is suitable for growing in places with weak light and sufficient scattered light.
