What are the growth advantages of cineraria? A detailed guide

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
Cineraria, also known as florist's cineraria or rich cineraria, is a perennial herbaceous plant, though it is usually grown as an annual or biennial. Cineraria blooms from January to April and is ideal for giving to relatives and friends during the Spring Festival; its bright flower colors convey a beautiful sentiment, and it is loved by many flower enthusiasts.

Morphological characteristics of cineraria

Perennial herbaceous plant, stem upright, 30 cm to 70 cm tall, covered with dense white long soft hairs. Cineraria leaves are kidney-shaped or broadly kidney-shaped, green on the upper surface and grayish-white beneath, covered with dense soft hairs. Capitulum inflorescence, florets purple-red, light blue, pink, and dense white. Blooming period January to April, fruiting period March to July.

Growth habits of cineraria

Cineraria prefers a warm, humid environment with good ventilation. It is not tolerant of high temperatures and is afraid of frost. It is generally cultivated in a warm greenhouse, and the temperature should not drop below 5°C at the leaf tips. If the room temperature is too high, it tends to grow leggy, causing the internodes to elongate and losing commercial value. If the temperature is too low, plant growth is affected and the flowers develop poorly.

Cineraria is a light-loving plant; with sufficient sunlight, the leaves are thick and deep-colored and the flowers are bright, but excessively strong sunlight can also cause the leaves to curl. Cineraria needs to maintain sufficient moisture, but must not be too wet; it is best if the leaves are not wilting.

Varieties of cineraria

Cineraria is a perennial herbaceous bulbous plant with brilliant flower colors; the main cultivated varieties include the European "red flower", the African "pink flower", and the Mediterranean "red with spotted markings", among others. The blooming period is from December to April of the following year, with the peak blooming period in February to March, making it one of the main ornamental potted flowers for New Year's Day and the Spring Festival. At Jingchun Flower and Tree Garden, a new variety with multiple colors on one flower has also appeared. Cineraria is cross-pollinated, so there are many horticultural varieties.

There are extremely many horticultural varieties of cineraria. They can be roughly divided into four types: large-flowered, star-shaped, intermediate, and multi-flowered, and within different types there are further varieties with different degrees of double flowering and varying heights.

Value and applications of cineraria

Cineraria is one of the main flowering plants for viewing in winter and spring. Its flowers are bright and can be planted in flower beds or potted and arranged in courtyards and corridors, giving people a fresh and pleasant feeling. Cineraria is a greenhouse flower; potted plants used as indoor displays have an early blooming period, and blooming in the cold winter is especially precious. The flower colors are rich and bright, especially the blue flowers, which shimmer with a velvety luster, elegant and moving. Cineraria blooms neatly with full flower forms, and can be displayed on low indoor stands, or multiple pots can be arranged in rows to form patterns to decorate hotel inner courtyards or meeting halls and theater forecourts, colorful and joyous. Usually a single pot can be enjoyed for more than 40 days.
