What are the characteristics of the bulb? A complete guide in one article

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
The succulent bulb is a plant in the genus Conophytum of the family Aizoaceae. The plant's surface is bright green and semi-transparent; in a suitable environment, it blooms with pale purple flowers in spring or autumn. In sunlight, the plant turns slightly red, and its crystalline, translucent appearance looks sparkling, like little glowing light bulbs, extremely beautiful.

Morphological characteristics of the bulb

The bulb's skin is bright green and semi-transparent; during the summer dormancy period, in an environment with sufficient light, the skin turns red. The flowers are large, pale purplish-red, with a white center, and open in spring or autumn. The flowers open during the day and close at night; if the growing environment has insufficient light or there are cloudy and rainy days, it is difficult for them to bloom.

Habits of the bulb

The bulb originates from South Africa, and its growth habits differ from those of other plants.

The bulb begins to grow in autumn, and in winter and spring it begins to develop a new plant body inside; usually each plant can produce only one new head inside. As the plant grows, the internal new head gradually swells, accomplishing its own renewal.

In summer the bulb enters dormancy, and its surface dries up and wraps around the skin. Although it is not attractive, the outer layer of old leaves can protect the plant and absorb water, playing a protective role for the new head. In autumn the plant awakens, and the kraft-paper-like old leaves on the surface fall off automatically, restoring its crystalline, translucent state.
