Summer is almost here, and the hardest season of the year is coming again. How to get succulents safely through summer - flowerpot choice really matters.

1. Succulents in plastic pots need controlled watering

We all know that although plastic flowerpots are cheap, their breathability is very poor. But to save costs, many succulent growers have no choice but to use plastic flowerpots to grow succulents. Succulents grown in plastic flowerpots in summer need special attention, and watering must be controlled. Many times, we see the surface layer of the potting soil is dry, but there is still a lot of water in the middle and bottom that has not evaporated. Growing succulents in plastic flowerpots requires lengthening the watering interval to prevent waterlogging from causing root rot in succulents.

2. Glass flowerpots require preventing root rot

Glass flowerpots have even worse breathability than plastic flowerpots and are more suitable for hydroponics. Using them to grow succulents is still okay in spring and autumn, but in summer special attention is needed - once water accumulates, succulents are prone to black rot. When growing succulents in glass flowerpots, be sure to put ceramsite at the bottom and mix a relatively large amount of granular soil into the potting mix to ensure water permeability and breathability.

3. Ceramic flowerpots can better ensure breathability

Ceramic flowerpots can be said to be the king of value for money when growing succulents. As long as the soil mix is reasonable, they can ensure succulents get through summer safely. But the bottom of the pot needs to be lined with ceramsite, and when watering in summer, be sure to ensure water can drain smoothly, otherwise water accumulation will cause root rot in succulents.

4. Purple clay flowerpots are the most ideal flowerpots

We all know that purple clay teapots are best for brewing black tea, precisely because their breathability is especially good. In fact, we rarely choose purple clay pots for growing succulents - the price is too expensive and they are not very practical. We can choose a slightly lower-grade red clay flowerpot instead, which has relatively higher value for money.

5. Be sure to choose a good watering time

No matter how good the flowerpot is, watering still needs to be controlled in summer. First, reduce the amount of watering. Second, lengthen the watering interval. Third, watering must be thorough. Fourth, watering in summer must be done in the afternoon, to avoid the midday high temperature cooking the succulents.
