Caladium (Caladium bicolor) has beautifully colored leaves and a great many varieties, making it suitable for greenhouse cultivation and ornamental display. Summer is the main viewing season for caladium, when the variegated colors of its leaves fill the eye with a sense of coolness. May to September is its period of vigorous growth.

Habits

It likes high temperatures, high humidity and a semi-shaded environment, is not tolerant of low temperatures, frost or snow, and requires loose, fertile, well-drained soil.

Care

1. Light. It prefers semi-shade and likes diffused light. During the hot summer, avoid direct exposure to strong sunlight and provide shade at midday so the leaves do not get scorched.

2. Watering. Water once in the morning and once in the afternoon each day, and be sure to maintain fairly high air humidity by frequently misting the leaves and sprinkling water around the flower pot.

3. Fertilizing. April to August is the peak growing period; organic fertilizer or a top dressing of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium can be used, applied once a month.

4. Pruning. When old leaves are found turning yellow and drooping, cut them off at once to encourage new leaves to sprout.

Calla lily (Zantedeschia) has beautiful flowers and blooms in spring and autumn, with a single flower lasting an especially long time. It is an excellent potted flower for decorating the living room or study, and also an ideal material for cut flowers, bouquets and flower baskets.

Habits

It likes a warm, humid environment with plenty of sunlight, and the soil should be kept moist during the growing period. The optimum growing temperature is 15-25°C; when the summer sun is too intense and scorching, shade it appropriately. The soil should be a fertile, clay loam with good water retention.

Care

1. Temperature. Calla lily likes warmth, with an optimum growing temperature of 22-30°C. Below 20°C, its growth slows and may even stop.

2. Light. It prefers semi-shade and likes diffused light. During the hot summer, avoid direct exposure to strong sunlight and provide shade at midday so the leaves do not get scorched.

3. Watering. Calla lily likes plenty of moisture during the growing period, so sprinkle water on the leaves and the ground often, and keep the leaves clean.

4. Fertilizing. Calla lily likes fertilizer; from leafing out until it blooms, apply light fertilizer frequently, using a nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compound liquid or granular fertilizer about once every 10 days.

Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema modestum) has broad, glossy leaves that stay green all year round and is especially tolerant of shade. Besides being potted to accent halls and rooms, its leaves can also be cut as foliage for flower arrangements or used to decorate outdoor settings. It is also a common type of plant that purifies pollutants, doing an excellent job of cleansing indoor formaldehyde, benzene and trichloroethylene.

Habits

It likes a warm, humid environment, tolerates shade, dislikes direct sunlight and is not cold-hardy; its growing temperature is 25-30°C. It is strongly shade-tolerant and dislikes direct strong light. It requires loose, fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic soil.

Care

1. Temperature. The optimum growing temperature is 18°C-30°C. It dislikes cold and frost, and the wintering temperature must be kept above 10°C.

2. Light: It fears direct sunlight and can be grown in a shaded spot all year round; even a short exposure to the sun will turn the leaves white and then yellow and withered.

3. Watering. Plenty of water is needed during the growing period; in midsummer, mist the leaves morning and evening. In winter, as the stems and leaves slow their growth, water should be controlled and the potting soil should not be too wet.

4. Fertilizing. During the vigorous growth period of stems and leaves from May to October, fertilize once every half month. If the leaves turn yellow after the plant is moved indoors in winter, apply one additional dose of diluted nitrogen fertilizer.
