Spring and summer are the seasons when wild weeds grow most vigorously in rural areas. Whenever this time comes, wild weeds grow everywhere in the rural countryside, fields, mountains and forests. For farmers, wild weeds are also a part of life. You cannot really say they hate them, nor that they love them. However, when it comes to some rather unusual wild weeds, many farmer friends still dislike them very much, and the wild weed "cleavers" (Galium aparine) is one of them. It is truly hated by farmer friends, and many farmer friends want to remove it as soon as they see it.

Why is cleavers so disliked? The author thinks it has to do with its growing environment. Early in the morning, when the author took the child for a walk in the village, I saw quite a few weeds growing beside the village vegetable plots and field edges, and one kind of weed was especially noticeable. This weed was cleavers, and it could be said to grow in large patches. Many farmer friends were in the fields removing this wild weed. One farmer friend said: This wild weed is really too annoying. You cannot finish removing it. It grows fast, and if you are not careful it grows into a large patch, covering the vegetables in the field. This seriously affects the growth of vegetables and other crops.

Almost every vegetable plant was surrounded by cleavers, which is indeed very headache-inducing. Cleavers has strong reproductive capacity, grows rapidly, and is a climbing plant. It not only competes with crops for sunlight and space, but can also cause crops to lodge, resulting in even greater yield reduction, and it affects crop harvest. Its impact is especially great on summer-maturing dry crops such as wheat and rapeseed. Therefore, farmer friends also regard cleavers as a major harmful weed in farmland, and remove it as soon as they see it. After removing cleavers, they throw it away as "garbage," because even pigs dare not eat this wild weed; once they eat it, they get sick and become listless.

So if cleavers is so annoying, does it have no use at all? In fact, the author also asked quite a few farmer friends in the village, and most thought cleavers was useless, a harmful weed, a waste weed. But in reality, cleavers is not only useful, it is also a good medicinal herb for treating illness.

According to the "National Compilation of Chinese Herbal Medicines," cleavers is also praised as "blood-activating herb" and "eight-immortal herb." The whole plant can be used as medicine, and it has the effects of clearing heat and detoxifying, reducing swelling and relieving pain, promoting urination, and dissipating blood stasis. It can be used to treat breast cancer ulceration, gum bleeding, colds, acute and chronic appendicitis, urinary tract infections, edema, dysmenorrhea, abnormal uterine bleeding, leucorrhea, cecitis, leukemia, otitis media and other symptoms. For external use, it can also treat carbuncles, boils, swelling and toxins, and traumatic injuries. Moreover, current research has also found that cleavers is a medicinal herb with blood pressure-lowering and anti-cancer properties.

Although cleavers has a very great impact on crops, is removed as a "malignant weed," and is not even eaten by pigs, making farmer friends dislike it very much, on the other hand, cleavers is also a wild weed with very great uses. Moreover, according to records, cleavers is non-toxic and has few side effects. It is also often used in traditional Chinese medicine, often together with scutellaria barbata, oldenlandia diffusa, black nightshade, dandelion, violet herb and others. Therefore, if cleavers is used correctly, it is a good herb; if not used correctly, it is a harmful weed.
