In penjing, attention goes first to the scene, second to the pot, and third to the stand; it is both a silent poem and a three-dimensional painting
Penjing is one of China's outstanding traditional arts, an artwork that uses plants and rocks as its basic materials to express natural landscapes within a pot. Using plants, rocks, soil, water and other materials, through artistic creation and horticultural cultivation, it typically and intensively recreates the beautiful scenery of nature in a pot, achieving the artistic effect of shrinking the land to a single inch and seeing the great in the small, while also expressing feeling through the scene and conveying a profound artistic conception, like a three-dimensional, beautiful, miniature version of a scenic landscape area.
On the occasion of the ninth Nanyang Rose Flower Festival, at the Bird's Nest Stadium, penjing and flowers served as the green leaves setting off the red blooms, injecting a dose of fresh blood into this year's rose flower exhibition.
The scene was crowded with visitors, who came first to admire the remarkably lifelike penjing, and second to appreciate the brushwork of master calligraphers and painters, satisfying their inner aesthetic and artistic enjoyment.
