Wall-climbing flowers can purify the air; an old gardener introduces several common varieties

There are many kinds of green plants that climb and flower on walls, such as ivy, flame vine, Chinese trumpet creeper, and Mucuna birdwoodiana. These plants that attach themselves to walls to grow and bloom not only beautify the environment and bring visual beauty, but also play a role in purifying the air.
1. Ivy
Ivy (Hedera helix) is a perennial evergreen climbing shrub of the genus Hedera in the Araliaceae family. It has aerial roots; the stems are grayish-brown or blackish-brown and smooth, with simple alternate leaves; the petioles have no stipules but have scales, and the leaves on flowering branches are elliptic-lanceolate. The umbel inflorescence is solitary and terminal, and the flowers are pale yellowish-white or pale greenish-white. Ivy's trailing stems root easily, and it is usually propagated by cuttings. Under greenhouse cultivation conditions, cuttings can be taken throughout the year, but spring from April to May and autumn from August to September are generally the best times. Before planting, spread decomposed organic fertilizer in the pot as a base fertilizer; after planting, water thoroughly once and place it in a shady spot. Once new branches grow, resume normal care. It can be planted on exterior walls and indoors. Ivy has beautiful foliage and stays green all year round, and has the effect of beautifying the environment and purifying the air.
2. Flame Vine
Flame vine (Pyrostegia venusta), also called firecracker vine, blooms every spring and can continue until May. The flowers are golden yellow, clusters upon clusters and blossom upon blossom of bright gold, like strings of firecrackers, very festive. Because the flame vine's flowering period is in spring, it coincides exactly with the Chinese New Year. On this special day, strings of brilliant flame vine flowers bloom most fittingly, bringing even more festive atmosphere to the Spring Festival. Flame vine can be planted on balconies, terraces, or in courtyards, and can be trained on wooden frames, or simply allowed to climb and grow along buildings. Flame vine can also be made into a small indoor bonsai to purify the air and beautify the environment.
3. Chinese Trumpet Creeper
Chinese trumpet creeper (Campsis grandiflora) is a climbing vine in the Bignoniaceae family. It likes warm, humid, sunny environments and is slightly shade-tolerant. It climbs upward on other objects by means of aerial roots, and its flowers are red. It prefers well-drained soil, is fairly tolerant of wet conditions, and has a certain tolerance to saline-alkali soil. Chinese trumpet creeper has ornamental value and medicinal value, with effects of promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis, and cooling the blood and dispelling wind. Its flowering period is May and can last until October. The flowers are red and very showy, giving it a certain ornamental value.
4. Mucuna Birdwoodiana
Mucuna birdwoodiana, also known as white flower oil hemp vine and Huashan hemp vine, is a plant of the genus Mucuna in the tribe Phaseoleae of the Fabaceae family, and is a national second-class protected plant. It likes warm, humid climates, is shade-tolerant and drought-tolerant, fears severe cold, and is propagated by cuttings. It is robust by nature, grows quickly, and has strong climbing ability, making it suitable for greening large trellises in courtyards and other places. Its vines climb and grow over trellises, and during the flowering period the inflorescences hang beneath the trellis in strings. Its flowering period is from March to May, and the beautiful blooms are very fitting for the season, making it one of people's favorite flowers.
