Yesterday Lanyao said that when it comes to how many climbing roses to plant to achieve an effect, it is not that the more the better; it mainly depends on your own needs and reasonable pairing.
As long as you understand the growth habits of climbing roses, creating a flower wall or flower arch is very simple.
But things are often not as simple as they seem from the outside. Yesterday Lanyao went to a flower show. In spring, a flower show naturally has no shortage of all kinds of roses, and flower walls and flower arches are naturally also a big highlight.
But what was disappointing was that these flower walls and flower arches did not show the strength their titles should have. You cannot say the gardeners who cultivated these roses did not understand; you can only say they simply did not do it.
Many of our gardening friends are like this: they read articles on growing techniques every day, but always just take a rough glance and fail to grasp the key points. When it comes to practicing themselves, they are completely confused again........
So how exactly should climbing roses be grown to create the effect of a flower wall?
Yesterday, gardening friends in Lanyao's reader group also asked Lanyao what kind of fertilizer can make climbing roses bloom explosively?
In fact, although fertilizing is very important, training is even more important for climbing roses! If you want climbing roses to bloom all over the wall, you only need one simple training action.
How to train?
Only through reasonable training can climbing roses bloom abundantly in spring. If not trained, climbing roses in spring will only bloom at the tops of the branches.
From the picture above, we can see that although the rose branches grew very long and formed a large columnar shape, the flowers were relatively few. The main reason is that reasonable training was not done.
How to achieve reasonable training? Lanyao will explain from the following 3 points.
1. Training time
The best training time for climbing roses should be in winter, during the rose dormancy period. At this time, the rose is in a state of growth stagnation, which is most suitable for repotting, training, and pruning work.
2. Preparation before training
Before training climbing roses, you should first do some preparatory work, such as preparing tying wire for bundling.
Before training, if the rose leaves have not fallen off, remove the leaves first, so that it is easier for us to observe the condition of the rose branches.
After removing the leaves, cut off excessively thin, weak, and old branches. Diseased branches and dead branches should also be cut off. Keep short branches temporarily, and after training is finished, keep or prune them according to training needs.
3. Training method
For training climbing roses on a flower wall, the training methods differ slightly according to the size of the rose flowers.
Training method for small-flowered varieties: train branches horizontally
Training method for medium- and large-flowered varieties: train branches diagonally upward, bend the top tips downward, and make the whole branch slightly arched.
This is the general principle for training climbing roses of different flower types. In actual operation, it is impossible for all branches to be thick and strong. For example, there will be strong branches and relatively weaker branches.
So Lanyao says that before training, we need to remove all the rose leaves. Only after removing the leaves can we observe the condition and distribution of the rose branches.
Overall, we need to train the strongest long branches to the upper part of the flower wall, fill the middle with medium branches, and fill the lower gaps with weaker branches. As shown in the picture above. (There are too many pictures, and the photos taken during winter training cannot be found, so I will just sketch it roughly.)
The above is the training method for a flower wall. Lanyao knows that many gardening friends grow climbing roses on balconies, making flower stands, flower arches, or small flower pillars, and these also need training.
