Excerpt from the "Three-Step Rose Growing Method" series

Yesterday Blue Demon said that how many climbing roses to plant to achieve the effect is not a matter of the more the better, but mainly depends on your own needs and reasonable pairing.

As long as you understand the growth habits of climbing roses, creating a flower wall or flower arch is very simple. But things are often not as simple as they seem from the outside. Yesterday Blue Demon went to a flower show. In spring, flower shows naturally have all kinds of roses, and flower walls and flower arches are naturally a big highlight.

But what was disappointing was that these flower walls and flower arches did not show the strength they should have had given their titles. You cannot say the gardeners who cultivated these roses did not understand - you can only say they simply did not do it.

Many of our gardening friends are like this: they read articles on growing techniques every day, but always only take a rough glance and fail to grasp the essentials. When it comes time to practice, they are clueless again........So how exactly should climbing roses be grown to create the effect of a flower wall?

Yesterday, gardening friends in Blue Demon's reader group also asked Blue Demon what kind of fertilizer can make climbing roses bloom explosively?

Actually, although fertilizing is very important, training is even more important for climbing roses! If you want climbing roses to bloom all over the wall, you only need one simple training action. How to train them?Only through reasonable training can climbing roses bloom abundantly in spring. If not trained, in spring climbing roses will only bloom at the tops of the branches.

In the picture above, we can see that although the rose branches grew very long and formed a large columnar shape, the flowers were relatively few. The main reason is that reasonable training was not done. How do you achieve reasonable training? Blue Demon will explain from the following 3 points.

1. Timing of trainingThe best time to train climbing roses should be in winter, during the rose dormancy period. At this time roses are in a state of suspended growth, which is most suitable for repotting, training, and pruning.2. Preparation before trainingBefore training climbing roses, you should first do a little preparation, such as preparing tying wire for binding.

Before training, if the rose leaves have not fallen off, you should first remove the leaves so that it is easier for us to observe the condition of the rose branches. After removing the leaves, you should cut off overly thin, weak, and old branches. Diseased branches and dead branches should also be cut off. Short branches can be temporarily retained, and after training is finished, keep or prune them as needed for training.3. Training methodFor training a climbing rose flower wall, the methods differ slightly according to the size of the rose flowers.

Training method for small-flowered varieties: train branches horizontally

Training method for medium- and large-flowered varieties: train branches diagonally upward, with the tips bending down, so that the whole branch is slightly arched. This is the general principle for training climbing roses of different flower types. In actual practice, it is impossible for all branches to be thick and strong; for example, there will be strong branches and relatively weaker branches.

So Blue Demon says that before training, we need to remove all the rose leaves. Only after removing the leaves can we better observe the condition and distribution of the rose branches.

Overall, we need to train the strongest long branches to the upper part of the flower wall, use medium branches to fill the middle, and use weaker branches to fill the gaps in the lower part. As shown in the picture above. (Too many pictures - the photos taken during winter training cannot be found, so here is a rough drawing.)

The above is Blue Demon's method for training a flower wall. Blue Demon knows that many gardening friends grow climbing roses on balconies, making flower stands, flower arches, or small flower columns. These also need training.
