A Detailed Guide to Growing Calla Lilies in Water and Key Precautions
I. Growing Methods
1. Pruning
First, when grown in water, many leaves often fall into the water and then rot; at this point you need to clean them out, then secure the plant in the bottle with stones.
Second, when switching from soil culture to water culture, it takes only one week for aquatic roots to grow.
2. Light
First, as long as there is sufficient sunlight and the temperature is suitable for it, it can grow vigorously in water and will keep blooming.
Second, you can place it on a relatively high balcony, then add some specialized plant food to the water, and spray the leaves with a solution once a week.
3. Environment
First, this plant is itself a wetland species, so it especially loves water; its roots carry the genes of aquatic plants, so as long as the water is clean enough, it can adapt.
Second, be sure to keep the water clean, and dissolved oxygen must be maintained at a certain level for it to succeed in water culture.
4. Nutrient Solution
You can prepare a specialized nutrient solution for it. Throughout the growing period, the pH of the nutrient solution should be between 5.5-6.5, and the amount used should be determined according to the weather; generally, supplying the nutrient solution two or three times a day is enough.
II. Precautions
1. The air must be fresh. It is relatively sensitive to cooking fumes and toxic gases, so do not place it near the kitchen, otherwise the smoke will harm it. During the growing period it needs sufficient sunlight, so it can be placed on a balcony or other spot with ample light; in winter, more light is needed.
2. Pay attention to air circulation. If the air does not circulate and the temperature is higher than the outside temperature, it will develop pest problems.
3. There absolutely must be no contamination. If the water becomes contaminated, the balance in the water will be disrupted.
