Gardenias are fragrant, azaleas are enchanting! Many flower lovers are very fond of these two plants, but quite a few have found that growing gardenias or azaleas often brings yellowing and withered leaves. What is going on? Let's take a look!

Leaves turning yellow"

- Ensure an acidic environment -

Gardenias and azaleas prefer an acidic environment. If the potting soil pH is alkaline or the water is alkaline, the plant's leaves will turn yellow.

Yellowing caused by environmental problems mostly occurs together with iron deficiency, because an alkaline environment affects the plant's absorption of iron, phosphorus and other elements. New leaves turn yellow first while the veins remain green; in severe cases the veins also turn yellow or white, and then the leaves wither and die.

When watering, you can add some edible vinegar or citric acid to make acidic water, or regularly use 0.2%-0.5% ferrous sulfate solution, which can produce very good results.

- Ensure a humid environment -

Azaleas and gardenias are both southern flowers and prefer a humid environment. If the air is relatively dry for a period of time, they easily become dry, withered and droopy, and this is especially obvious with azaleas.

If this happens, you can first water thoroughly using the soak method, then cover the whole plant with a plastic bag and place it in a bright, ventilated spot. Once the leaves stand upright, remove the bag.

There is another trick here: you can move the flower to the shower area of the bathroom, prop it up, plug the drain and fill the floor with water, and close the bathroom door. Let the air become a bit more humid, and the leaves will recover very well.

When watering, be careful not to water the flowers, otherwise the flowers will easily rot and wither.

- Ensure a breathable environment -

Most flowers and plants prefer loose, breathable soil. For potted plants, if the soil is heavy and not breathable, the roots cannot breathe well and the leaves easily turn yellow.

Breathability has another meaning too: water must not accumulate for long periods, and the soil must not stay in a constantly wet state. In such conditions the roots also cannot breathe properly, leading to root rot and yellowing leaves.

If the soil becomes compacted and not breathable, loosen the soil promptly; if the compaction is quite severe, you also need to repot.
