This article should have come out yesterday, but it's all because Lanyao has rather poor self-control. I got carried away and binge-watched a show until 2 a.m., and as a result I was completely wiped out, hehe.......
Today Lanyao wants to talk about the problem of blind buds on roses. Let's look at the problem this flower-growing friend encountered:
Have you run into the same problem? Lanyao has received inquiries about similar problems from no fewer than 10 people, so Lanyao feels it is still very necessary to popularize some knowledge about blind buds on roses.
What are blind buds on roses?
First let's get to know blind buds on roses. Lanyao said before that roses bloom at the top of new branches. When the top of a new rose branch does not grow flower buds and stops growing, a blind bud has formed.
The picture above shows a blind bud on a rose; you can see that the top has already stopped growing. Such a branch will not produce flower buds or bloom.
Why do roses get blind buds? How should they be handled? So why do roses get blind buds? In the end it is because of poor nutrition, though there are actually many reasons that lead to poor nutrition.
1. Lack of fertilizer
Roses grow very quickly. If you do not fertilize roses for a long time, it is very easy for blind branches to appear due to lack of fertilizer.
As in the picture above, the rose's new branch has grown rather long, but no flower buds have appeared. This is mostly caused by lack of fertilizer.
Handling method:
Lightly prune the blind branches to encourage new branches to grow, and at the same time strengthen water and fertilizer management.
2. Lack of light
Roses are sun-loving flowers. If there is insufficient light, it can also cause roses to only grow branches without blooming. When cultivating roses, sufficient light should be ensured; in theory, no less than 4 hours of direct sunlight a day.
3. Lack of pruning
Lack of pruning is also a main cause of blind buds on roses. The rose of the flower-growing friend mentioned at the beginning of the article had a large number of blind buds, which was obviously caused by not pruning.
Old rose branches have relatively poor growth vigor. When multiple bud points sprout at the same time, and fertilizer and water are not especially sufficient, it is very easy for the bud points to sprout together but all fail to grow large.
Handling method:For this kind of rose with a large number of blind buds caused by lack of pruning, if there are no strong new branches and all are blind buds on old branches, then you must not prune blindly.
Because a blind bud is almost just a few leaves and has no length at all, pruning only the blind bud is equivalent to pruning leaves, but if the entire branch is cut off, once management is not good, it can easily lead to the death of the rose.
The correct approach should be:
First strengthen water and fertilizer management and apply more fertilizer. Then press the rose branches as flat as possible and do not let them stand upright. The main purpose of doing this is to make the rose sprout relatively strong basal shoots from the base.
After the basal shoots have grown well, the old blind branches can be cut back to a reasonable height.
4. Poor root system
There is also a kind of rose whose branches look decent on the surface, but whose root system is relatively poor. This kind of rose is relatively common in flower markets. Everyone also knows that many plants nowadays use hormones, so when buying flowers you still have to keep your eyes wide open.
For this kind of rose with a poor root system, we can only lightly prune the blind branches, retain more leaves, and at the same time repot the rose into a smaller flower pot for care, to promote root development.
