12 spring, summer and autumn flowering plants that wither in winter and self-seed to grow into a big patch the next year
Below I will introduce some plants that can keep blooming through spring, summer and autumn. These are all annual flowers, but if you grow them in a place that stays warm all year round, they can also become perennials. Their advantage is that they can bloom all year round, with especially abundant flowers. Every year I like to plant some, but the following 12 kinds can all self-seed and grow into a big patch on their own.
1. Sweet alyssum
Sweet alyssum is a very lovely flowering plant. It grows fairly low and compact, is suitable for propagation by sowing, sprouts easily and grows very quickly. It can be grown as a potted plant or planted in the yard. Most of its varieties have a sweet herbal scent, but note that some hybrid varieties cannot set seed, so they cannot complete self-seeding.
2. Cornflower
Cornflower comes in a wide range of colors, though blue is still my favorite. The reason it is called cornflower is very likely because it quickly grows as a weed in cornfields. Planting it in the yard is no problem, and it can also self-seed and propagate. It is a small herbaceous flower with good ornamental value.
3. Candytuft
Candytuft has extremely abundant flowers and excellent ornamental value. Besides the purple and red varieties, white candytuft is also my favorite. It can self-seed and propagate in a cool, windy environment, and looking at its flowers in the hot summer is simply a pleasure.
4. Coreopsis
Coreopsis is a herbaceous plant that is especially easy to care for. It grows easily and blooms for a very long time. In tropical regions it can even bloom all year round. Coreopsis also spreads easily and has a good self-seeding effect, and it can also be grown as a potted plant.
5. Cosmos
Cosmos is also an ornamental flower very suitable for planting in the yard. Some varieties can even produce larger and larger flowers. Its flower colors are colorful and beautiful, and it looks especially lovely. The common pink and white ones are the most popular. Growing cosmos requires fairly ample sunlight and well-drained soil. It grows easily, and it is also a plant that strongly attracts bees.
6. Flax flower
Some people can grow flax flower into a perennial plant, but it is generally grown as an annual. Although it will wither, it can self-seed and propagate, and its flowering period can last several weeks. It can produce moving blue flowers, and that is enough to attract me.
7. Forget-me-not
Forget-me-not is a flowering plant very suitable for sowing after spring warms up. It is still very easy to care for. You can sow and raise seedlings directly in a flower pot, and when the seedlings grow to 3 to 4 leaves, they can be transplanted with the soil.
For care, you need to keep the environment warm and cool. The growing spot must not be too stuffy or humid, and it grows best at around 20 degrees. Forget-me-not's small blue flowers are mesmerizing just to look at.
8. Delphinium
The tall delphinium is suitable for planting in a cool environment. It is also very suitable for sowing and propagation after spring warms up. Before sowing, the seeds can be soaked in clean water for a few hours, which can promote faster germination and rooting. In winter, protect it from the cold. It blooms especially abundantly, but note that its seeds are poisonous, so children should be kept from eating them by mistake.
9. Love-in-a-mist
Love-in-a-mist is also very suitable for sowing directly after spring warms up. The success rate of sowing and cultivation is fairly high, and care is very easy. Love-in-a-mist grows quickly, but its shortcoming is that the flowering period is not too long. Still, the flowers are beautiful and charming, and the leaves are also quite worth looking at, appearing very gorgeous. After flowering, it produces odd-looking seed pods.
10. Moss rose
Planting some moss rose in the yard is wonderful, especially if you plant colorful varieties. You can also choose to grow some double-flowered varieties, which look like mini versions of peonies. No wonder people call it pine-leaf peony. As long as the growing spot has ample sunlight and is protected from freezing, it can keep blooming, and it can also self-seed and propagate.
11. Nasturtium
Nasturtium is the easiest climbing plant I have ever grown from seed. Its seeds are especially large, and it is very easy to raise seedlings. Its flowers, leaves and seeds are all edible. I usually plant it beside the vegetable garden. The flowers taste like fresh capers, and its flowers and leaves both have very high ornamental value. Care is also especially simple, and it can bloom all year round without fertilizer.
12. Tobacco flower
Tobacco flower is a plant with a rather unusual appearance. Its flowers look somewhat similar to four-o'clock flowers, its leaves are very large, and the plant is fairly tall. The pot in the picture above already counts as the shortest variety.
Tobacco flower is also a relatively easy plant to cultivate. It likes a warm environment and has good heat tolerance. When cultivating it, use loose, well-drained soil and protect it from freezing.
