Are succulents actually easy to grow or not? I believe everyone has their own experience. Having grown succulents for so long, I have met all kinds of succulent lovers. For example, a newbie I met recently, ever since falling into the hobby, has had every pot of succulents die, which is heartbreaking to watch. What exactly is the reason?

Growing succulents always comes down to three points: water, medium, and light, and succulents are no exception. Light mostly affects how well the plant grows, which is an advanced-level matter. But water and medium can directly affect whether the plant lives or dies. Many growing newbies, when they first start growing something, always casually use some soil, then enthusiastically and lovingly water the plant every day... and then... there is no then...

Therefore, although succulent plants are easy to grow, you should still pay attention to the following points.

1. Medium: the soil should be loose and breathable, with good drainage, but with a certain water-holding capacity, and be neutral or slightly acidic. There are many mediums suitable for growing succulents, but a very important point is that it must be sterile. The direct cause of succulent death is often rot, and the only direct cause of plant rot is fungal infection.

During the transplanting process of succulents, if the medium itself carries various pathogens, plus improper later care (such as frequent watering), it is very easy to cause fungal infection. Therefore, from the very beginning when choosing soil, you should choose sterile soil, or soil that has been sterilized.

There are two common ways to sterilize: one is to use a fungicide such as carbendazim. The other is to use high temperature sterilization; for example, I have heard of someone stirring soil in a pan, and also heard of someone putting soil in a microwave to bake it. Good medium, good start.

2. Watering: the watering principle is "dry then wet," meaning if the soil has dried out completely, water it thoroughly. If it is hard to judge whether the soil has dried out, you can insert a toothpick into the soil, and when it is usually time to water, just check how dry or wet the toothpick is. "Dry then wet" is a common term in flower growing, meaning to water thoroughly in one go.

Then wait until the soil is almost completely dry before watering a second time. Its purpose is to prevent root rot caused by overwatering and pests and diseases caused by dampness. Of course, it does not need to be so strict; as long as you do not water too frequently, it generally will not cause succulent death. Growing succulent plants is actually not difficult; in fact, just grow them roughly! Many newbies kill their succulent plants because they water too frequently.

3. Succulents all love sunlight, and with a certain amount of light they will grow better.

The above three points can be said to be the basics of succulent care. If any one factor cannot be satisfied, the succulent may become ugly or die. If succulents are not growing well, you need to carefully find the cause and address it accordingly, so as to fulfill the wish of becoming a succulent tycoon as soon as possible.
