Yesterday, in Lanyao's reader group, two flower lovers asked the same question at the same time:

The newly bought rose flower wilted after being kept for two days. What exactly is the reason?

Today my neighbor came to Lanyao's home to admire the roses and mentioned the same problem, saying that the rose seedlings bought online had all their leaves drop off and did not grow just two days after arriving.

It seems that there should be quite a few flower lovers who have encountered the same problem. So today Lanyao will specifically analyze for everyone why bought rose flowers wilt after only a few days of care.

Why do newly bought roses wilt after two days?

This problem needs to be looked at in several situations. Different seedling conditions show different states. Apart from wilted rose seedlings, most are nutrient pot seedlings with poor roots or half-bare-root seedlings.

For V9 square pot seedlings like those at Lanyao's home, shipped in the original pot with garden soil, proper seedling acclimation will not cause this problem.

So next Lanyao will specifically analyze the causes of wilting after rose transplanting and the ways to deal with it.

1. Reasons related to the seedlings themselves

1. Weak greenhouse seedlings:

Many people buy small seedlings cultivated in greenhouses. Their roots are poor to begin with, the branches are leggy and thin, and this kind of seedling has poor stress resistance. It is very normal for it to show abnormalities when the environment changes suddenly. Beginners are advised to buy cautiously. Although they are cheap, if they cannot be kept alive, or are kept but do not grow, this is time you cannot afford to waste.

2. Bare-root or half-bare-root seedlings

Bare-root or half-bare-root seedlings are also rose seedlings that very easily develop problems.

What are bare-root or half-bare-root seedlings? Many people should have bought them: the kind of rose seedling with a lump of yellow mud wrapped around the roots. This kind of seedling can be called a half-bare-root seedling.

If, when planting, you do not wash off the wrapping yellow soil, then wilting, failure to root, and failure to grow very easily occur.

Solution:

When encountering this kind of rose seedling with mud-wrapped roots, it is recommended that you still soak it in water and wash the roots. It is better to plant bare-root than to plant with the original yellow mud.

With bare-root planting, the entire soil environment is the same, so rooting is fast. Planting with yellow mud makes rooting very difficult because of the difference in substrate, and if it does not root, naturally it will not grow.

If you have already planted it with the yellow mud and find that the leaves have also wilted and fallen off, what should you do?

First dig out the rose seedling, then rinse the soil off the roots clean, then soak the roots overnight in water with rooting powder, so that both the rose branches and roots absorb enough water.

Then replant and water thoroughly. If it is planted in the ground, you can leave it alone. If it is in a pot, after planting put it in a place with sufficient light to sunbathe, keep the potting soil slightly on the dry side, and wait for new buds to sprout.

3. Oversized seedlings

Many flower lovers like to buy oversized seedlings. What are oversized seedlings? They are rose seedlings with a height of 1-1.5 m.

Although this kind of rose seedling looks fine on the surface, in fact, when these seedlings were cultivated, part of their roots grew into the soil, so they can be regarded as semi-field-grown.

When leaving the nursery, the roots that had grown into the ground were broken and damaged, and combined with the bumps of transport, the root damage is actually very great.

When they reach the flower lover's hands, they are reluctant to prune them. At first it feels fine, but before long problems will be discovered.

Solution:

Lanyao has always advised everyone not to buy this kind of oversized seedling. They are really hard to handle. Pruning them feels like a waste, and if you do not prune them, the rose itself will choose to abandon some branches to save its life. So the best thing is not to buy them.

Then what should you do after buying one?

After buying one, if the soil it comes with is mud, then I advise you not to touch it and just plant it directly with the original mud.

Then prune the rose branches, cutting off all flowers, flower buds, thin and weak branches, blind branches, dead branches, and overly dense branches. This reduces nutrient consumption.

In later care, pay attention to loosening the soil often and applying organic fertilizer. After it goes dormant in winter, you can completely change the soil.

Note:Small rose seedlings can have their roots washed and soil changed, but for oversized seedlings, because the roots themselves have suffered a lot of damage and the branches are long and numerous with high consumption, further root damage cannot be caused, so do not wash the roots.

2. External reasons

In addition to the reasons related to the seedlings themselves, some external reasons can also cause rose seedlings to wilt and lose vigor.

1. Improper watering

Many beginners like to keep watering potted plants constantly and fail to water only when dry, causing root suffocation from too much water and resulting in wilting.

In this situation, you need to control watering. Usually pay attention to watering only when dry and thoroughly when dry. Once you have watered too much, you should take the plant out of the pot and place it somewhere, or loosen the soil to speed up soil moisture evaporation. From then on, pay attention to controlling watering.

2. Improper seedling acclimation

Many people acclimate seedlings in a shady place, but roses should be acclimated in a place with light. For the specific acclimation method, you can refer to Lanyao's previous article about rose seedling acclimation.

3. Sudden situations

Yesterday a flower lover asked Lanyao: the rose had been fine all along after transplanting, but after a strong wind at night, it wilted the next day.

This kind of situation belongs to a sudden occurrence. Due to the stimulation of harsh external conditions, the rose cannot adapt, or the wind caused damage to the roots of the newly transplanted rose and abnormal conditions appeared.

In this situation, you only need to prune the rose appropriately and acclimate the seedling.
