The farmhouse builder not only wants to build an unprecedented rural home but also an art settlement for his hometown

In a declining rural area, he wants to use an unprecedented design concept to inject vitality into this place again.

He is Ma Qingyun, an internationally renowned architect and the first Chinese person to receive a scholarship to study in the Department of Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania after architectural predecessors such as Liang Sicheng and Chen Zhi.

In 1992, he began working in New York, USA

In 1995, he founded MADA s.p.a.m. Architectural Design Firm

However, Ma Qingyun's most pivotal moment

should be 1998

He began to get involved in rural work

He built a house for his father

Using stones that had been drifting in the river since the time of the Lantian Man

As a gift from a son to his father

Facts proved that he had bet right

This place has now become China's Burgundy

Thus there were a winery and wine cellars

Ma Qingyun's work "Jing Yu"

The landmark building of Yuchuan Winery is Jing Yu

It is also one of Ma Qingyun's relatively important works

Like many, many rural villages in China

Young people went to the city to work and stayed there

After the elderly remaining in the countryside passed away, the houses became empty

In addition, villagers kept building new houses

The whole countryside was like an empty shell that had lost its soul

A few years ago, Ma Qingyun passed by here

On a sunny afternoon, he was lost in thought:

These empty houses, like the fate of rural China

Where will they ultimately go?

Will they gradually die away in the wind and rain

Or become what people call retro farmhouse entertainment?

Obviously, neither answer was what he wanted

So beside the Qingyu River

Ma Qingyun's team rented a

vacant courtyard house with a floor area of 920 sq m

And began a more daring assumption

This is what it looked like when they first rented it

A standard local farmhouse

Corn was even planted in front of the house

There was no walled courtyard

It was tightly connected to the neighboring farmhouse

Ma Qingyun said

When farmers build houses nowadays

Although everyone thinks they do not look good

Their desire is the most real

But as an architect

Designing houses has aesthetic and commercial purposes

If one combines the truth of their desire

With the crudeness of the form

Perhaps a different chemical reaction can be produced

So the renovation began

The current rough exterior appearance

What does Ma Qingyun want to turn this rural house into?

A self-sufficient space

Integrating a homestay, studio, restaurant and sales space
