When growing plants, first grow the roots. Only when the roots are healthy can the plant flourish with lush branches and leaves, green foliage and bright flowers. There is an old saying in China: "deep roots, lush leaves; a firm base, thriving branches" - that is exactly what this means. Even for succulents and pothos, which are easy-care plants, if the roots are unhealthy, the branches and leaves above the soil will likewise slowly wither and die. Today let's learn to do a little something at the bottom of the pot to grow healthy roots, so your plants won't get root rot, the leaves will be lush green, and they will bloom nonstop through all four seasons.

“

Growth, development, harvest and storage

”

Growing healthy roots is a process. Throughout the year, plants also go through growth, development, harvest and storage, in tune with the four seasons. During the growing period, let the plant grow and increase fertilizer and water. During the dormant period, you must respect the plant's condition, let it rest, and reduce fertilizer and water. Otherwise, you may cause the plant to become too wet and too hot and get root rot, or to stay small and not grow.

“

Air permeability without root rot

”

The air permeability of the potting soil is the key to ensuring normal root respiration and growth, while its opposite, water retention, also has a great impact on healthy root growth. Air permeability and water retention are the two sides of the same coin in potting soil for plants, and neither can be missing. Most flower growers' potting soil and growing medium retain too much water and have insufficient air permeability.

Mesh netting

You can place a piece of mesh netting at the bottom of the pot so the potting soil won't leak out, and at the same time it won't easily seal off the drainage holes, allowing excess water to drain out in time.

Similar options include

window screen, mosquito netting, stockings, coffee filters, tea bag pouches, non-woven fabric, cotton pads

and so on.

Tile shards

Placing tile shards at the bottom of the flower pot mainly serves to drain water and allow air through. You can lay two layers in a herringbone pattern. Because tile shards are very sturdy, they can last a long time.

Similar options include

broken bricks, pebbles, crushed gravel

and so on.

Clay pebbles

Clay pebbles are a man-made fired product. Their surface is a hard shell, ceramic or glazed in nature, with the function of blocking water and retaining air. Placed at the bottom of the pot, they make a very good drainage layer. Buying clay pebbles online is now very convenient. They are also relatively light in weight and moderately priced, making them a good choice for city dwellers.

Clay pebbles themselves carry a fiery quality, so before use, soak them in water for several hours (broken bricks and tiles are usually very old, so there's no need to worry about the fiery quality). A similar option is

crushed coal cinders

, but coal cinders will break apart over time, so don't crush them too finely, otherwise the drainage capacity will gradually decline.

Willow twigs

Willow bark contains a relatively large amount of salicylic acid, which, after dissolving into water, offers some help for root growth and inhibiting bacteria.

Palm fiber

Palms grow very slowly. Generally, the bark of an 8-10 year old tree can start to be peeled (at a circumference of about 40 cm). If you keep delaying peeling, it will inhibit the growth of the palm tree. Nor can you peel it when it is too small; if you damage the tree body, it will stall its growth.

Peeling is generally done in March-April each year, or September-October. It must not be collected or peeled in summer or the cold of winter.

Palm fiber is an excellent air-permeable, water-draining and separating material, equivalent to a natural gauze. It is relatively dense and will slowly rot over time and become fertilizer. Similar options include

loofah sponges, pine needles

and other net-like natural materials.

Nut shells

Leftover sunflower seed shells, peanut shells, pistachio shells, pine nut shells, longan shells and other nut shells are all very good materials. If they are salty, you need to soak them in water to remove the salt, then dry them in the sun before use. Crush these nut shells and put them at the bottom of the pot; they not only help with air permeability but also provide fertilizer.

In southern regions, some have oil tea seed shells, which are excellent materials for growing flowers. Not only is their air permeability strong, but the tea seed shells also contain a relatively large amount of tea saponin, which can inhibit bacteria and control pests, and their source is also very abundant.

Foam

You can use a somewhat harder foam material, break it into pieces and place it at the bottom of the pot; the air permeability is very good. Moreover, it reuses waste and reduces the production of garbage, achieving two things at once.

Charcoal chunks

Charcoal is loose and air-permeable and can prevent root rot caused by water accumulation. Charcoal also has a porous structure that can lock in and absorb some nutrients and release them slowly, and it can slowly rot and become fertilizer itself.

“

Green leaves and nonstop blooming

”

Now that we've solved the air permeability problem, let's add a little something so the flowers and plants have lush green leaves and bloom nonstop!

Slow-release fertilizer

Slow-release fertilizer contains nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and some trace elements, and controls the release of nutrients through coating, so it won't release excessively and cause nutrient loss and waste, and it can continuously release nutrients for several months, allowing plants to slowly and continuously absorb nutrients.

For the home

slow-release fertilizer is the first choice for gardening; it is clean and hygienic. When buying, pay attention to choosing products with a fertilizer registration certificate number, and try not to buy unbranded products.

Eggshells

Eggshells contain a relatively large amount of phosphorus fertilizer and calcium fertilizer. After processing, putting them into the potting soil can not only improve the soil structure but also provide phosphorus fertilizer and calcium fertilizer, help plants improve cold resistance, and also promote plant flowering and increase the fruit-setting rate.

Bones

Put the bones left over after eating pork ribs, lamb ribs, beef ribs, etc. into a pressure cooker, steam over heat for 30 minutes, then pound them into powder. Place 3 cm at the bottom of the flower pot, put a layer of soil on top, then plant the flowers. This is beneficial for the growth and flowering of the flowers.

Animal organs

Collect animal organs and put them in a container, add a small amount of water, seal it, and after a period of rotting and fermentation, it can be mixed with water for use.

Dead leaves

There is a saying, "turned into spring mud, it protects the flowers even more." Dead leaves themselves are a link in the cycle and can provide plants with nutrients and fertility. Collect a few dead leaves; not only will the soil be more loose and air-permeable, but fertility will also increase, and of course the plants will grow even better!

The above are all materials we can easily get in daily life

Many are also very convenient and cheap to buy now

Flower growers can choose the method that suits them
