. Bonsai is a miniature garden scene concentrated and crafted within a flower pot. It is a living work of art, an organic combination of flower and tree cultivation techniques and shaping and nurturing. Through the creation of a three-dimensional artistic image of natural scenery, it truly reproduces nature and expresses people's aesthetic ideals and artistic feelings toward nature.

Speaking of my grandpa, he really is a cheerful and happy old man. He always finds things to keep himself busy, and he is especially happy doing it. It was only in the past two years that he fell in love with potted plants. He has potted all sorts of things, like pothos, Chinese roses, clivia, lucky bamboo, spider plants, and narcissus. This year he has become even more fond of potted roses. Well, the old man was especially successful with his potted plants, and even Grandma Wang next door, who rarely goes out, came over to see them.

Potted roses have a certain cold resistance and are suitable for growing in loose, fertile neutral soil rich in humus with good drainage and aeration. They like environments with plenty of sunlight, good air circulation, good drainage, and shelter from the wind, and they need appropriate shading in midsummer.

Preparation of potting soil

① Mix 70% garbage soil and 30% river sand.

② Mix 60% dried river mud and 40% honeycomb coal cinders.

③ Mix 70% vegetable garden soil, 20% honeycomb coal cinders, and 10% river sand.

Time for potting

It is best done after leaf fall in early winter or before budding in early spring.

Light and temperature: Sufficient sunlight promotes good growth. Whether planted in the ground or in pots, they should be placed in a sunny spot and receive more than 4 hours of direct sunlight every day. They cannot be kept long-term in a place indoors with insufficient light. In winter, bring them indoors and place them in a sunny spot. The suitable growing temperature is 12-28°C, and they can tolerate a low temperature of -20°C.

During the rose planting process, prune thin, diseased, and dead branches in early spring, apply liquid fertilizer in early March, water about once a week, and around May keep spraying water on the branches and leaves, which can promote the opening of flower buds. After the flowers fade, cut off about half of the flowering branch tips and then fertilize again, which can produce more branches and expand the plant.

Because potted roses are controlled by the limited potting soil, their fertilizer and water requirements are relatively strict.

① Generally, the first choice is convenient and hygienic compound fertilizer, because compound fertilizer contains various elements with a good ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Apply about 20 grams per plant each time (the amount must not be too much). Use an iron tool to loosen the soil around the edge of the pot to a depth of about 10 cm, then apply the fertilizer and cover it with soil.

② Watering is one of the basic tasks of growing flowers, but it is often also the reason plants easily die. Watering depends on the potting soil. Once it dries, water thoroughly. If it is too wet, it easily causes root rot. Repot the soil once every other year, and when repotting, cut off the encircling roots at the bottom of the pot. This can make the flowers more numerous, larger, and more vivid in color.

Since Grandpa started growing potted roses, I have noticed that the aunts and grandmas nearby come running to our house even more frequently. I have to say, Grandpa has also made more friends.
