The 2018 First National Bonsai Masters and BCI International Bonsai Masters Masterpiece Exhibition is about to raise its curtain at Shanghai Botanical Garden, sparking a bonsai sensation in Shanghai and focusing national industry attention on fine works. This exhibition is hosted by the Chinese Society of Landscape Architecture and the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Greening and City Appearance, organized by Shanghai Botanical Garden and the Flowers, Bonsai and Viewing Stone Branch of the Chinese Society of Landscape Architecture, supported by China Flowers & Penjing magazine, Huamu Penjing magazine, and the Shanghai Bonsai and Viewing Stone Association. The theme of the exhibition is "Inherit the Masters' Spirit, Carry Forward Traditional Culture" and will bring Shanghai residents a spectacular five-day bonsai feast!
A total of 52 masters from across the country will participate in this exhibition with their finest works, displaying more than 100 masterpieces, including masters' fine works and Shanghai-style masterpieces from the collection of Shanghai Botanical Garden, making it one of the highest-level bonsai exhibitions in the country.
Chinese bonsai art masters and BCI international bonsai masters are the backbone and leading figures of Chinese bonsai. They have played an important role and made outstanding contributions in promoting the development of China's bonsai industry, promoting exchanges between Chinese and foreign bonsai, and enhancing the international status of Chinese bonsai. This event aims to gather masters' fine works, showcase masters' style, build a high-end platform for exchange and cooperation in the bonsai industry, promote exchanges among masters of various schools, and advance the development of our country's bonsai industry. At the same time, it will also present a grand bonsai feast to the people of Shanghai and the whole country.

The first exhibition mainly featuring masterpieces by national-level bonsai masters
This is the first bonsai exhibition held in China with the proud works submitted by national-level bonsai masters as the protagonists. All exhibited bonsai are created by national bonsai art masters, representing the highest level of the industry. During the exhibition, there will also be on-site production performances by masters, self-commentary and mutual exchange of masters' works, advanced training classes for masters, a working meeting on masters' re-evaluation and assessment, and completion of the review work for the fifth batch of Chinese bonsai art masters. Bonsai is a living artwork that integrates science, technology, literature, painting, and emotion. To become a bonsai master requires long-term study, practice, and continuous refinement in skills, aesthetics, science, art, virtue, and other aspects before one can achieve it.
Strongly inviting national bonsai art masters to participate
This exhibition will display works by 50 Chinese bonsai art masters and BCI international bonsai masters nationwide, including the late Shanghai-style bonsai grandmaster and Shanghai Botanical Garden bonsai pioneer Master Yin Zimin and the famous bonsai educator Master He Gansun, as well as Master Pan Zhonglian, who is among the second batch of national-level bonsai art masters and has passed the age of 80 (86 years old), all submitted by their children or organizations. The completeness of the number of national bonsai masters participating, the scale of submissions, and the high quality of the exhibits can be called the greatest in the industry.
Showcasing the unique charm of bonsai
Bonsai is living sculpture, a re-creation of life according to the growth patterns of plants. Among the masterpieces from all corners of the country in the exhibition are the vigorous and natural Lingnan bonsai, the twisted and varied Sichuan bonsai, the elegant and classic Su-style bonsai, the strict and dignified Yangzhou bonsai, the bright and smooth Shanghai-style bonsai, the quaint and peculiar Anhui bonsai, the majestic and upright Zhejiang bonsai, the Rugao bonsai with cloud-like top and rain-like feet and a beauty's waist, the grand and powerful northern bonsai, and the rapidly developing southwestern bonsai, all exquisite beyond compare and captivating.
The exhibition also reflects the bonsai characteristics of Shanghai Botanical Garden by displaying together the works of four national-level bonsai masters trained by the botanical garden. In addition, it also displays together the works of nine Shanghai bonsai masters, showing the elegance of bonsai in the Shanghai region.
Focusing on the cultivation of master talent
The sustainable development of bonsai cannot be separated from the cultivation of future talent, nor from the masters' strict self-discipline and leading by example. This exhibition not only allows a full appreciation of the masters' style, but will also break the traditional lifetime tenure and iron rice bowl of masters. Masters whose virtue does not match and whose skills do not improve will have their "titles" removed, urging masters to keep moving forward. It will also select the fifth batch of national bonsai art masters, supplementing new high-quality strength for the subsequent development of bonsai art. The master production performances and work commentary activities are also a great opportunity for ordinary citizens to learn about traditional Chinese bonsai art.
