Can the yew (Taxus) actually be grown hydroponically?

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
Yes, it can be grown hydroponically. You can plant it in a basket, then place the basket in a bottle, making sure the roots do not go too deep into the water. Pay extra attention to temperature and water changes, keep it away from air conditioning, and do not throw debris into the water.

I. Whether it can be grown hydroponically

1. It can be grown in water. You need to change the water once every seven days, and the roots should not be submerged too deeply. If the part in the water is relatively deep, it will easily rot. You can also spray its leaves with monopotassium phosphate so that it grows more vigorously.

2. After washing its roots clean, plant it in a basket, then fix it in place with coarse sand grains. Place the basket on a container with a suitable opening, and add a little water or nutrient solution every day, but do not let the basket be completely submerged in water; it is enough for the bottom of the basket to touch the water surface. Pour out the excess water. Over time, the yew will grow new roots, and the new roots will extend into the water, so you will not need to add water every day.

II. Precautions for hydroponic growing

1. Temperature

It is a plant that likes shade and cool conditions. It is best not to expose it to the sun by a window. Spray water on its leaf surface every day to maintain humidity. If it does get sun, it should be in moderation. It is best to ventilate it once in the morning and once in the evening, about fifteen minutes each time. The best time for ventilation is generally around nine to ten in the morning. You can place it in the living room or in a corner of the balcony.

2. Changing the water

If the weather is too hot, you can spray it with water twice a day, and you can drip water onto the leaf surface. If you are adding water, be sure to use clean water. If its leaves are relatively upright and very glossy, it means it is not short of water. If the leaves are a bit shrunken, it needs watering. If the leaves are drooping, then the water shortage is quite serious.

It needs different amounts of water at different stages. During the growing period from March to November, it needs more water; during the dormant period from December to February, it needs less water. In spring and autumn, you can change the water once a week; in summer, once every three to five days; in winter, once every seven to ten days.

3. Environment

It does not have high demands for its environment. Besides not letting direct sunlight hit it, also be careful not to point an air conditioner directly at it indoors. In winter, do not let it get close to a heater, and do not throw things like tea leaves into its pot. If the leaves turn yellow or insects attack it, you can spray it with thiophanate-methyl.
