Detailed Guide to Asparagus Fern Propagation Methods and Precautions
I. Propagation Methods
1. Division
First, generally use branches that have grown for two or three years for division, move it out of the pot, then clean off the soil from the roots. Its survival rate is very high; as long as the roots are not severely damaged, it will survive.
Second, use some chicken manure as fertilizer, choose soft soil, and place some pond mud at the bottom of the pot.
Third, after division, water it thoroughly once. Normally, wait until the soil is dry before watering, and the water temperature should be similar to the air temperature.
2. Cuttings
First, if the temperature is too low with this method, the survival rate will not be very high, so it is best to do it in an environment of 20-30 degrees. Choose a bamboo with abundant branches and leaves, make a small notch on the chosen bamboo, then coat it with a layer of moss. Leave it for ten days, keeping it moist throughout this process.
Second, after ten days, a nodular growth will form at the wound, and then it can be cut off.
Third, put some soft, moist soil in a cloth bag, then poke some small holes on the outside of the bag, and put the branch inside. Place it in a pot, fill the pot with soil, and it will quickly take root and survive.
3. Sowing
First, when its seeds become soft, it means they are ripe, and they can be picked, washed clean with water, then dried and stored.
Second, in early April, plant its seeds in sandy soil, preferably in a wooden pot. Place three seeds in each pot. Then cover with sandy soil, not too thick, and not too firm.
Third, after planting, water it generously, then seal it with plastic wrap, ensuring a temperature of around 25 degrees and sufficiently moist soil.
II. Precautions
1. The soil must be sufficiently breathable, and the drainage must be good enough.
2. When potting it, do not damage its roots. Change the soil once every spring, and each time use a slightly larger pot.
3. Water it frequently, but the amount should not be too large. You can spray water on its leaves. During the intense heat, spray once or twice a day.
