What is the difference between the Peace Lily and the Yuanbao Tree? A quick guide to tell them apart
I. Peace Lily
This name is its commercial name; its scientific name is rather complex and generally hard to remember. It is a very common plant that only grows leaves and does not bloom, so it is a typical foliage plant. The basal triplinerved veins on its leaves are very distinct, protruding on top and sunken below; the lateral veins extend from the leaf base, and sometimes there is a small vein on both sides of the leaf margin. Its reticulate veins are quite prominent, looking very much like a honeycomb shape.
II. Yuanbao Tree
It was given this name because of a very unique feature when it is young: two protrusions grow at its base, looking very much like a yuanbao. In fact, those are just its cotyledons, and after one or two years they will rot away. Its leaf veins grow in a more conventional pattern, with one main vein in the middle and many small veins on both sides, similar to other leaves, with nothing very distinctive.
III. Differences
1. Both trees stay green all year round, and when the temperature is especially suitable, their leaves will not wither or fall. They both grow fairly tall; the former is a small tree, and when it matures its size will be slightly smaller than the latter.
2. Their leaves are different, and this is their biggest difference. The former's leaves are generally simple leaves, with a plate-like pith in the small branches. The former's leaves are compound leaves; it is a pinnate once-compound leaf.
3. The former's leaves have more veins, and the traces are more obvious, looking like a complex honeycomb. The latter's veins are more conventional, with one main vein in the middle and many secondary veins around it.
