Post-bloom care methods and precautions for hibiscus

After blooming, the flowers need to be dealt with so they do not waste nutrients for nothing. The first thing we need to do is cut off the withered flowers, then apply fertilizer, and after that give it supplemental light. Because giving it appropriate light can make it bloom again. The water supply also needs to be sufficient; if it is not enough, the buds are very likely to drop.

1. Pruning spent flowers

Dealing with its withered, spent flowers is essential and comes first, because only in this way will it not waste nutrients for nothing, and it will be easier to get another wave of blooms. There are also skills to learn when it comes to cutting off spent flowers: we must cut from the joint where its stem and branches meet, because this can effectively avoid the loss of nutrients, and only then will there be more nutrients for blooming afterward.

2. Sufficient light

Light is essential; this is a plant that likes light very much, and many people have a mistaken understanding of this plant, thinking it only blooms once. In fact, if we place it in a spot with relatively strong light, it will easily bloom again. The usual placement is indoors in a sunny spot facing south, and placing it outdoors is also feasible.

3. Timely fertilizing

Because once it blooms there will be a lot of nutrient loss, we need to replenish it in time. The main nutrients are phosphorus fertilizer and potassium fertilizer, with nitrogen fertilizer as a supplement. If you cannot be bothered to buy them one by one, you can buy a compound fertilizer. The interval between the first bloom and the second bloom is relatively long, about half a month, so basically fertilizer should be applied once after it has bloomed once.

4. Water

Water is also very important, because it prefers a relatively humid environment, so we need to give it plenty of water, especially during the flowering period. If it blooms but the water cannot keep up, its buds are very likely to drop. So under normal circumstances we should keep its soil in a moist state. Spray water once in the morning and once in the evening; only then will the blooming be better.
