What to Do About Root Rot in Hydroponic Anthuriums? Solve It Easily with the Right Method

Anthurium is a perennial evergreen herbaceous plant in the Araceae family. Its flowers are uniquely beautiful, and its blooming period is long-lasting. It is suitable for pot cultivation or for mass planting in shaded garden areas, and in a suitable environment it can bloom continuously year-round. Many plant enthusiasts, tired of soil cultivation, have started thinking about hydroponics!
Hydroponic flowers are cleaner and more attractive than ordinary soil-grown plants, but Anthurium has high air humidity requirements, so you need to master the right techniques to grow it well in water.
I. Steps for Converting Soil-Grown Seedlings to Hydroponics
1. Washing the Roots
Choose a soil-grown Anthurium with good growth. Dig the potted Anthurium out of the soil, cut off rotten roots, fibrous roots and old leaves, and wash the soil off with clean water.
2. Disinfection
Place the washed and trimmed Anthurium roots and stems into a potassium permanganate solution to disinfect, then rinse the Anthurium with clean water again. This is an important step to prevent root rot.
3. Potting
When potting Anthurium for hydroponics, it is recommended to use a semi-transparent container. Carefully thread the Anthurium roots into the hydroponic basket. River stones can be used in the basket to hold the plant in place and also to enhance its appearance. After adding water, leave 1/3 of the height empty, which also allows the solution to have a broader contact area with air and can increase the oxygen content in the water.
4. Changing the Water
During the acclimatization period, change the water frequently: once every 3 days for the first half month, and once a week for the second half month. Each time you change the water, add nutrient solution once, and use a nutrient solution specially designed for hydroponic flowers. After one month, the Anthurium will grow new roots, and the newly grown roots will be relatively adapted to the aquatic environment. The leaves will begin to sprout new growth. At this point, you can change the water 2-3 times a month depending on the water quality.
5. Mist Frequently
Anthurium likes a relatively humid environment. In dry northern regions, you should increase air humidity by misting the leaves of the Anthurium. In summer, mist once at 10:00-11:00 and once after 15:00.
II. Key Points for Care
In later care, reduce the use of nutrient solution as appropriate to avoid microbial growth. For changing the water, you can use tap water that has been left to sit for 2-3 days or cooled boiled water.
