Why does a climbing rose have only blind buds and no flowers?

Yesterday in Lanyao's reader group, a flower friend asked a question. Although it was a small question, Lanyao felt it was still very necessary to explain it here. The problem this reader and flower friend encountered was this:

The new shoots growing from the old branches of a climbing rose are all blind buds with no flower buds, yet the basal shoots are growing very vigorously. What is the reason? Looking at the overall condition of the rose, it is very healthy, but many of the new shoots are blind buds with no flower buds. From the overall growth, it can be seen that not flowering is not due to fertilizer.

Then what exactly is the reason? Roses bloom in spring, so why does this rose only grow leaves and not bloom? For this reason, we still have to look at the rose itself. Looking carefully at this rose's branches, the old branches are all relatively [thin], and the new branches are all thin, short blind branches. In fact, this is caused by not pruning properly in winter.

In the previous article, Lanyao already said this. Roses need regular pruning to bloom well. Not only do shrub roses need pruning; climbing roses also need pruning.

When pruning roses in winter, the thin, weak branches that cannot bloom need to be cut off, so that sturdier flowering branches can grow out in spring.

It is very obvious that this rose was not pruned properly in winter. The thin branches that could not bloom were not cut off. Since the branches themselves do not meet the conditions for blooming, the new shoots growing from them will naturally also be very thin and weak, and unable to bloom.

Because no flower buds were produced, and the rose still had a large number of leaves for photosynthesis, and the fertilizer and water in the ground planting were also sufficient, this prompted the rose to basically sprout a large number of basal shoots, so the basal shoots grew vigorously.How should this be remedied? How can it be made to bloom?

For a rose plant like this, if you want it to bloom earlier, after the leaves of the basal shoots turn green, you can cut off the thin, weak old branches. Blind branches that meet the conditions for blooming can be lightly pruned to make them sprout and bloom again.

After the basal shoots grow to the length you are satisfied with, they can be bent horizontally to promote new branches to sprout and bloom. You may be very curious: what kind of branches can actually bloom? What kind of branches cannot bloom?
