The candelabra cactus can grow to several meters tall, very tall indeed, and its growth is truly spectacular, but it rarely blooms. Some people grow it for over ten years, and even after growing several meters tall it simply does not bloom, or its flowers are very small and have no ornamental value.

If we want the candelabra cactus at home to be covered in flowers all year round, we can achieve this through grafting.

The candelabra cactus is a plant in the Euphorbiaceae family and can be grafted with crown of thorns (Euphorbia milii). Crown of thorns can bloom in all four seasons, and its bright red little flowers are very beautiful too.

This small candelabra cactus was grafted half a month ago and has already grown together and taken; today I will use this candelabra cactus, which is over 2 m tall, for grafting, so that several of its branches will all be covered in flowers.

First, choose a branch of the candelabra cactus, cut off part of the top, and shave the cut surface flat. Choose a section of crown of thorns about 20 cm long as the scion, and cut both sides with a grafting knife, exposing the pith in the middle. Crown of thorns is covered in thorns, and its sap is toxic, so you must be careful when handling it.

The bottom of the crown of thorns only needs to be cut open about 2 to 3 cm, then cut a slit into the candelabra cactus at the middle pith, about as deep as the cut surface of the crown of thorns.

Insert the crown of thorns into the slit. Note that when inserting, it should be close to one side of the candelabra cactus and aligned with the cambium, so that the graft is more likely to take.

Then fix it in place with a cactus spine. Do not pierce it right in the middle; pierce it a bit off to one side.

Place it in a dark spot and care for it for about half a month. Do not water it, and do not let it touch water. Then it will take, and it takes very easily.

In this way, after a few months, your several-meter-tall candelabra cactus will be covered in bright red flowers. Absolutely beautiful.
