What is the difference between Green Aeonium and Yulong Guanyin? A quick guide to tell them apart

There is a difference between the two: the former is taller and larger, with longer and thinner leaves and a greater number of flowers. The latter is shorter and smaller, the leaves have a rather foul smell, and the number of flowers is relatively sparse.

1. Green Aeonium

It is a relatively large variety; at its largest, the leaf rosette can even grow to more than 40cm, and it can stay green all year round. The leaf surface is relatively smooth, with very sparse fine hairs, and the leaf edges also have fine hairs.

No matter how much sun it gets, its leaves stay green. Its growth rate is not very fast, but it blooms relatively easily; generally, if grown at home, you can still see it flower.

It likes warm, bright and relatively dry areas, and has a fairly strong resistance to drought. It grows relatively fast in the cold season, because in hot periods it briefly goes dormant as it is too hot.

If you want to propagate it, you can cut off its rosette-like leaf head in early spring and plant it in soil; this variety is relatively easy to propagate.

2. Yulong Guanyin

Apart from summer, the other three seasons are its growing seasons. Although winter is relatively cold, as long as the temperature is 10°C, it still grows relatively fast.

Like Green Aeonium, in summer, due to the temperature, it also has a brief dormancy, and its leaves curl up. In daily care, you do not need to worry too much; at the beginning, give it about 3 shichen of sunlight per day, and after it grows stems you can reduce the hours of sun exposure.

If you water it, during its growing period it needs watering at least once a week.

One of its more noticeable characteristics is that it often gives off a rather unpleasant foul smell, especially on its leaves; a light touch with your hand is enough to smell it.

It is relatively common at flower markets. When planting it, you can use relatively coarse granular soil and water it as little as possible.

3. How to distinguish them

1. Plant shape: the former's leaves are relatively compact and it grows taller. The latter's leaves are relatively loose and its size is shorter and smaller.

2. Leaves: the former's leaves are longer and thinner; the leaf edges of both have fine hairs, but the spacing between the fine hairs of the former is greater than that of the latter. The former's leaves are more fleshy and more glossy.

3. Smell: the latter's leaves have an unusual odor after being in the sun, and are rather foul-smelling.

4. Flowering: the former's flowers are lateral, more numerous, and yellow in color. The latter's flowers are white, only a few of them, with a single flower stalk in the middle.
