Reasons Why Gardenia Only Grows Leaves and Does Not Bloom

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
Actually, in simple terms, it is just that the plant has grown leggy. There are mainly four reasons. The first is related to not pruning in time, so all the nutrients go to the stems and leaves rather than to the flowers. The second is that the type of fertilizer is wrong, with too much nitrogen fertilizer and, by comparison, too little phosphorus and potassium fertilizer. Third, before it forms flower buds, too much water also easily causes the leaves to grow fast while the flowers fail to open. Finally, there is the issue of temperature: in winter the temperature is too high, which causes the buds and leaves to grow quickly and also consumes excessive nutrients, resulting in fewer flowers.

1. Pruning Problem

(1) Specific reason: Some plants grow very vigorously. If they are not pruned for a long time, the nutrients will first be supplied to the stems, leaves and other parts, so the growth of flower buds will be hindered.

(2) Solution: It is best to prune the plant regularly; not pruning for a long time is certainly not going to work.

2. Fertilizer Problem

(1) Specific reason: This mainly means the type of fertilizer is wrong. Specifically, too much fertilizer containing N causes the leaves to grow very quickly. However, there is too little fertilizer containing P, so the flowers cannot open. In this way, the plant looks vigorous, but in fact there are only leaves and no flowers.

(2) Solution: Phosphorus fertilizer is of great significance for flowers. Especially when the flower buds begin to differentiate, be sure to use more phosphorus fertilizer and less nitrogen-containing fertilizer. For example, (KH2SO2) solution, etc.

3. Water Problem

(1) Specific reason: Before the flower buds form, if too much water is given, it will also make the plant's leaves grow especially fast, but the flowers will grow few.

(2) Solution: During the bud formation period, appropriately reduce the amount of water.

4. Temperature Problem

(1) Specific reason: This mainly refers to the temperature being too high in winter when the plant is dormant. In this way, the plant's dormancy will be broken too early, and then the buds and leaves will sprout too early, consuming a lot of nutrients. By the time it is supposed to bloom, the number of flowers will be very small.

(2) Solution: The temperature during dormancy is best around five degrees; it is enough for it to survive the winter safely.
