What to do if your gardenia grows too tall? Learn the correct way to handle it
1. No pruning for a long time
(1) Specific reason: For this plant, regular pruning is extremely important. If it is not pruned for a long time, it will grow very leggy and appear very tall, affecting the overall visual effect. So the measure, of course, is appropriate pruning.
(2) Solution: It mainly involves the following aspects. The first is in spring. During this period, you can choose any time to cut off the branches that are too long, the branches that have grown leggy, and the messy branches that affect the plant's appearance. In this way, you can both prevent the plant from becoming too tall and make it more ornamental.
The second is from May to July. When its vigorous growth period is about to stop, it needs to be pruned once more, removing the top shoots. This is to encourage the sprouting of surrounding branches, which can keep the plant from looking too tall and also produce more flowers later.
Third, after the flowers fade, the branches need to be appropriately shortened to encourage the sprouting of new branches. Also, when the new branches grow three nodes, pinch off the tips. In addition to these points, overlapping branches can also be cut off at the appropriate time.
2. Fertilizer problem
(1) Specific reason: Generally speaking, if too much nitrogen-containing fertilizer is used, it may cause the plant to grow too tall, increasing the pressure on us to prune. Moreover, if the amount remains high for a long time, it may also cause other harm.
(2) Solution: For this aspect, the corresponding measure is to appropriately reduce fertilizer use, especially fertilizers containing relatively more nitrogen, which should be used even less.
