Amaryllis has a magnificent flower shape and bright red blooms. In the life of an amaryllis, there is no such word as "low-key." Once it blooms, it must be unrestrained, like clusters of blazing flames, proudly holding its head up. That's right, "Amaryllis, destined to be red!"

Such a passionate and beautiful flower, have you got one yet! Never grown it before? No worries, let's first learn how to grow it into a bright red beauty.

1. Planting

Amaryllis is a bulb plant, which means its roots are bulb-shaped. The base of this type of bulb plant easily attracts nematodes, and once infected with nematodes, the whole plant is done for. So before planting, we need to give this big guy a carbendazim bath to drive away bacteria and bugs. When soaking it, only soak the bulb, do not soak the leaves, to avoid the solution getting into the leaf core, which is hard to dry out and can cause heart rot. After soaking the amaryllis, place it in a cool, ventilated place to dry for about a day, and plant it after the roots are completely dry.

2. Soil

Bulb plants are best grown in sandy loam soil, which has good drainage and aeration and helps the roots spread out. Gardeners can mix potting soil, river sand, and leaf mold in a 2:1:1 ratio. This little soil-mixing secret formula, I wouldn't tell just anyone. After mixing the soil, first lay a layer of large clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot to help with aeration and drainage. Once the clay pebbles are in place, you can add the mixed soil and start planting!

When planting amaryllis, be careful not to bury the entire bulb in the soil. Leave one-third of the bulb above the soil surface, so you can observe the growth of the bulb and avoid rot. Once new leaves grow, you can cover it with a layer of soil to bury the bulb.

3. Watering

For a newly planted amaryllis, don't rush to water it. First place it in a cool, ventilated place, and water it after it has settled in. For routine watering, wait until the potting soil is dry before watering, because the amaryllis bulb already stores a lot of water, and too much watering easily causes root rot. So, be sure to wait until the potting soil is dry before watering.

4. Light

For a newly planted amaryllis, pay attention to shading, which helps with rooting. You can cover it with a black plastic bag and place it in a ventilated spot. Once the amaryllis grows new leaves, you can remove the plastic bag and place it on the balcony, letting it bask in the sun to its heart's content! That's how the amaryllis will grow fully and produce bright red flowers!
