Excerpt from the "Three-Step Method for Growing Roses" series

In yesterday's article, Blue Demon introduced in detail the issue of rose bud thinning. Rose bud thinning is our own choice, but if one day you find that all your rose flower buds have dropped overnight, what would you think?

Do you feel like the whole world has changed when you wake up? Hehe, in Blue Demon's reader group, a flower lover encountered exactly this problem. A rose that was painstakingly grown, full of buds on every branch, had almost all its buds drop overnight! What on earth happened? Let's first look at the scene:

You can see that the flower pot is full of fallen flower buds, and from the appearance of the fallen buds, there is no sign of poor health at all.

So what exactly caused it? What happened overnight?Today Blue Demon will pretend to be a great detective and unravel the mystery with everyone, searching for the answer!

First, let's look at the cross-section of this flower bud. It is very neat, and the pedicel shows no sign of yellowing, which means it is definitely not a problem of nutrient deficiency or disease. Looking at the cross-section, it was very likely bitten off by some small animal or insect. So what could it be?

Previously, a flower lover said they personally saw a sparrow perched on their rose, helping them thin the buds......... This, this, this sparrow is way too diligent! A thumbs-up for you!

However, for this flower lover's rose in our reader group, Blue Demon can basically rule out the possibility of a sparrow being the culprit. Because sparrows also sleep at night, and if they were going to help, they would choose daytime. Hehe.... The incident happened at night, so what animal or insect likes to be active at night?

Mice.......... Blue Demon personally thinks the possibility of mice being the culprit is plausible! First, mice really do like to come out at night to cause trouble. Second, observing this rose, the positions of the bitten-off flower buds are relatively low, and mice are capable of doing this.

Of course, we say the possibility of mice biting them off exists, but it was not necessarily done by mice. Because roses have many thorns, mice may often bite succulents, but roses have a very poor taste, so mice may not necessarily like them.So what other possibilities are there? There is a kind of insect I wonder if everyone has heard of - the cutworm!

The cutworm is a type of underground pest. Adult cutworms come out at night to be active and hide in the soil during the day. The larvae, on the other hand, feed both day and night.

If you find that your rose leaves have been eaten by insects but you cannot find where the insects are, then you need to be extra vigilant. At present, it seems the possibility of a cutworm being the culprit is very high, but we often do not easily discover cutworms.

To control cutworms, we can use trapping methods and use a sugar-vinegar liquid (mix 6 parts sugar, 3 parts vinegar, 1 part baijiu, 10 parts water, and 1 part 90% trichlorfon crystals evenly) for trapping and killing. You can also shallowly bury poisonous soil mixed with soil insect pellets around the rim of the flower pot for prevention and poisoning.
