How to propagate a Radermachera sinica (China doll) by cuttings? Detailed explanation of the correct method and steps
I. How to take cuttings
1. First, in March or April, when the temperature has reached about 15°C, cut off a branch that has already grown for one to two years. By this time the branch has become woody and is still quite easy to cut; about 15 cm to 20 cm is enough. Then remove all the leaves on it, keeping only a few tender leaves at the top.
2. Then use a preparation, such as potassium permanganate, to disinfect the wound. The solution must not be too concentrated. Then place it in a windy, shady area to let the moisture on the branch dry off.
3. If growing it in water, you can now insert it into a bottle with water. If planting it in soil, insert it to a depth of half or one third of its length. For water culture, before it grows roots you must change the water every one or two days. For soil culture, before the wound has closed and it has rooted, you also need to water it to keep the soil moist.
4. After it has grown roots in water, you can move it into a pot and water it thoroughly. Place it in a shady area to let it recover; after about 5 days you can care for it normally. For soil culture, after it has grown roots, you can plant it in a pot together with a ball of soil, preferably planting two or three plants per pot. You can apply some rooting liquid to the wound, which can make it easier for it to survive.
II. How to care for it in daily life
1. Whether it receives sunlight all day or partial shade, it can survive, but it must not be exposed to strong sun for too long, nor should it be kept in a dark area all the time.
2. Its soil just needs to be kept moist under normal conditions. Do not water it too excessively. You can spray a little water on the leaves every two or three days, which can increase humidity for it and also help lower the temperature.
3. Loosen the soil or turn it over regularly, then mix nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium with some water and sprinkle it onto the soil.
