What to do when apple geranium (Plectranthus amboinicus) becomes woody? Causes and solutions

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
When you encounter this phenomenon, the best approach is to cut the soft young branches off the original plant and re-propagate them from cuttings. First, cut off the selected, somewhat thicker branches. Then, prepare a pot and soil. Next, insert the branches into the soil to a depth of two or three cm. After that, water thoroughly and place them in a shaded spot for care. After about half a month, if new leaves have grown, that means you have succeeded.

1. What is lignification

Some friends may not quite understand the meaning of this term, and so they cannot identify the problem the plant is facing or solve it. So, let me explain it here first. Cells produce "lignin", and once it accumulates in large amounts, the cell wall becomes hardened, increasing its ability to support weight. Some friends may then ask: isn't that a good thing? Why does it need to be dealt with? This is because it reduces the plant's ornamental value. In addition, the plant's likelihood of falling ill increases. So, when you notice this phenomenon, it needs to be dealt with promptly.

2. Solutions

When this phenomenon appears, beheading the plant is generally of no use; the best approach is to re-propagate from cuttings. However, you need to pay attention to the timing: winter is relatively unsuitable and it cannot be done then. At other times, it is generally fine.

3. Specific steps

(1) First, select a few somewhat thicker, healthy branches, about five to seven cm long. Carefully cut them off, taking care not to damage their stems.

(2) Then prepare a flower pot and potting soil. There are almost no requirements for the pot, but the soil needs to be a sandy soil with good air permeability and good drainage.

(3) Once everything is ready, insert the branches into the soil, controlling the depth to two to three cm deep. After inserting them, you must water thoroughly. Then, place them in a relatively shady spot for care. Note that you should not keep watering on rainy days.

(4) After about ten-plus days, roots may grow. Wait another half a month or so; if leaves have also grown, that means you have succeeded.
