Why can't peonies be planted at home?
I. The Belief
Regarding the saying that this plant cannot be grown at home, it is actually rather superstitious, because legend has it that it absorbs yin energy, and if our house is a yang dwelling, it won't be able to suppress it, so many elderly people say that only temples can grow this kind of flower.
But in reality this is not the case, especially since this flower is extremely beautiful and highly ornamental, so it is very suitable for cut flowers or for planting in flowerbeds. Those who believe this saying can believe it, and it's fine if you don't, because planting them won't necessarily bring you bad luck.
II. Cultivation
If you are someone who does not believe this saying, you can follow the methods below to grow it at home.
1. Watering
Actually this plant does not need much water. If we put it in the yard, generally apart from natural rainfall, it does not need frequent watering. The time it needs the most water is before and after it blooms. If there is a spring drought, you can try watering it a few times, so that the soil moisture can be replenished, but you must not water too much each time.
2. Light
Because it prefers light, especially when it is growing rapidly, only when this condition is met can it grow luxuriantly and the flower color be beautiful. Of course, it can also grow normally in lightly shaded places. If it is in the flowering period, we can lower the temperature and increase the humidity, and provide it with appropriate shade, so that its ornamental period will be longer.
3. Temperature
Temperature is quite important. It prefers high temperatures and is also quite cold-tolerant, so even in hot summer it can pass through safely. Whether at 42°C or -46°C, it can grow normally.
4. Fertilizing
Fertilizing needs to be controlled. Generally, fertilizer is applied about three times a year. The first time is when new shoots emerge, and afterward it also needs to be applied when the leaves and buds extend. Generally a quick-acting fertilizer is used.
5. Shaping
Generally it needs pruning, including branches, trunk, buds, flower buds and spent flowers. After about two or three years of planting, the trunk can be trained, and if it grows relatively fast it can be pruned into a single trunk. For weaker-growing plants, you can just cut off the weak branches and so on.
6. Pest Control
Generally it is early prevention, and if pest damage occurs, you can use pesticides, generally with more frequent applications and shorter intervals.
