How to care for peonies in winter? Winter care methods and precautions

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
Peonies are relatively delicate plants, and if you want them to make it through winter safely, you still need to take certain measures. First, we need to confirm that they go dormant in winter, so we should let them stay in a dormant state, as this is the only way they will grow especially well the following year. In addition, their temperature requirements are also relatively high, and both daytime and nighttime temperatures need to be carefully adjusted. Besides that, we also need to give them a certain amount of light, but not direct sunlight. Next, let's talk about it.

1. Temperature

If we look at it from the perspective of temperature, it needs to be divided into the south and the north.

In the central and southern regions, because winter temperatures are not very low, although they are only around zero degrees, compared with colder places, the temperature here is not considered low, so we can absolutely place it outdoors.

If we live in the north, these places are very cold, and leaving it outside will not work. If it is potted, it must be moved indoors, but if it is planted in the ground, it does not matter, because the ground itself can be regarded as a heat reservoir. Even if the air temperature is relatively low, the temperature at the ground surface is still acceptable. Even if the top layer of soil freezes, its temperature will not be very low, so this is relatively stable, and thus we do not need to specifically move it indoors.

But if it is potted, because the pot is relatively small, it is very easy for freezing or soil temperatures that are too low to occur, so we still need to move it indoors for care. Generally, a larger pot is better for it, because if the pot is relatively large, the internal temperature changes will be much smaller. In addition, we can also stuff some broken foam into a cardboard box, then put the flower pot inside, as this can keep it warm and is also better for its growth.

2. Sunlight

In fact, in winter we still cannot place it somewhere with direct light shining on it, for several reasons.

The first is that it may stimulate its growth. As mentioned earlier, it needs to go dormant in winter, so growth is not a good thing, and the following year it may grow relatively poorly.

The second reason is that if it is exposed to the sun during the day, the soil absorbs heat, but at night when the temperature is lower it will get frostbitten, so it will be harmed.

Generally, a corridor is relatively suitable for overwintering, because sunlight cannot reach here, and the temperature is generally around zero degrees. If the place where it is located is relatively warm, then put it on a balcony facing north. In this way, sunlight will not have much effect on it, so this is also a very good choice.
