How to propagate lilac by cuttings with a high survival rate? Detailed method and steps
1. Time
The time still needs to be decided. We generally choose to carry out this operation one month after flowering.
2. Branches
There still need to be certain rules for selecting branches. Generally, the cuttings we use are soft shoots grown in summer; they need to be new leafy shoots grown in the current year, and they also need to be semi-lignified. Alternatively, hardwood branches can be used, but if hardwood branches are used, they are basically branches that have grown for one or two years, and they also need to be relatively robust.
3. Method
① The length of the branch we use is about 15 cm. First, cut off the leaves at the bottom, leaving only one or two leaves at the top.
② After that, soak its substrate with indoleacetic acid at a concentration of 100mg/L for eight to twelve hours. The main purpose of this is to ensure its rooting rate. With it added, the rate will reach about 80 percent.
③ After that, take it out, and then wash off its cuttings with clean water.
④ If it is a soft shoot, we can insert it directly into the hotbed, and it will directly take root and sprout into a new plant. Generally at 25°C, roots will grow in about one month. When the roots change from white to yellow-brown, we can transplant the seedlings and plant them in place.
⑤ If we use hardwood branches, they are basically also inserted into the seedbed, and then shaded. In about fifty days, they can grow roots. This planting in place is generally in the spring of the following year.
