Detailed Explanation of Kumquat Tree Cutting Propagation Methods and Techniques
I. Time
For propagation by cuttings, it is best to do it in spring and summer, and April to June is the best time, because during this period the temperature stays above 20°C, there is no scorching sun, and the cuttings are more likely to survive and grow.
II. Process
1. First, select very robust branches from the mother tree and cut them off, leaving only about 7-10 cm. Leave one or two leaf stalks on the branch, and keep only half of the leaves on them, cutting off all the rest. After cutting it off, you can seal the wound with wax so that moisture will not evaporate.
2. Use a pot of moderate size with good drainage as the cutting pot. Find some sandy soil that is sufficiently loose, then disinfect the soil and put it in the pot, and insert the branch into it. If inserting in April or May, the part inserted into the soil needs to account for two-thirds of the entire branch, and then place it in a partially shaded area for care. If inserting in June, insert the branch two-fifths into the soil, and then place it in a fully shaded environment. Generally, to increase the chance of survival, it is best to insert the cutting immediately after pruning.
3. After inserting it into the soil, water it thoroughly, then cover the pot with a transparent bag. In this way, it will not be rained on, and bacteria and the like cannot harm it. Moreover, the most important advantage of doing this is that it can keep the branch retaining a certain amount of moisture, so it will not die from moisture evaporation, which better protects its growth.
III. Daily Care
After taking the cuttings, it can grow roots and sprout branches in about two months. During these two months, the plastic bag should be opened every few days to let it breathe. At the same time, pay attention to the condition of the soil. If it is dry, water it to help increase humidity. Once the new leaves on the branch have spread open, the plastic bag can be removed, and the young plant can also be repotted into a new pot.
