How to Fertilize Azaleas: Correct Methods and Techniques Explained

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
For the general public, this is a very common plant, so many people choose to buy it, but fertilizing after buying is also a big problem. Actually, this flower does not need heavy fertilizer, but it does need fertilizing. Generally, we go by month: from March to May it is basically once a week, from June to August no fertilizing, from late September once every ten days, and after October no more fertilizing. Of course, the type of fertilizer is another matter, and different seedling ages differ as well. Let us explain the specifics slowly.

1. Types

Fertilizing requires getting many things right. Besides timing, what we need to control is the amount and concentration. It has many roots, so it can absorb fertilizer, but it is very afraid of highly concentrated fertilizer, so generally we cannot apply human feces and urine to it; alum fertilizer water is fine.

2. Timing

Fertilizing it must be targeted to its growth stage. Generally speaking, from March to May, when its branches, leaves and flower buds are growing, what we need to do is apply fertilizer once a week, so that it can have enough nutrition. From June to August, because of midsummer it enters semi-dormancy, so it is best not to fertilize at this time, otherwise its leaves will drop and may turn yellow, and it may even be attacked by pests and diseases. After September, it begins to grow again, and at this time it is basically given a phosphorus liquid fertilizer once every ten days, and after October the fertilizer supply is stopped. If fertilizing is not stopped at this time, it can instead make the plant grow new leaves, but these leaves will be very fragile and very hard to get through the winter.

3. Seedlings

Generally, plants of different sizes are fertilized differently. If it is only one to two years old, there is no need to fertilize, because at this time the soil has enough fertilizer. For three to five years old, from late spring to midsummer, you can consider applying dilute fertilizer once about every fifteen days. In addition, if the plant is already four years old, then in both spring and autumn dry cake fertilizer needs to be applied, in an amount of about 20 grams.

We should note that if the plant shows yellowing and withered leaves, most of the cause may be too much fertilizer, so we should stop fertilizing, then dig out the dry fertilizer, and afterward water more to deal with the accumulated fertilizer. After watering, move it to a windy place. If too much fertilizer has accumulated, it needs to be washed two more times, and generally after half a year it can grow normally.
